I have spent quite some time over the years discussing with many different people why Britain is such an attractive destination for all sorts of immigrants.
This is not the thread to get into that.
    BUT
Many Brits perhaps 52% of them that voted in a distant referendum kept saying over and over that immigrants arriving in Britain were.....and here you can pick and mix.
    Would immediately on arrival be

    Given free housing
    Given a weekly income
Would have immediate access to social security payments
Would have immediate access to free medical care even cosmetic surgery
Would be given more than any British citizen.
    Etc etc etc.

I suspect repeating this continaly for decades might have influenced some. Just be careful what lies you repeat.

You just said that perhaps every leave voter believed all the rubbish you just posted about immigration. Be careful what lies you repeat.

I think that the current phrase is that the topic has been 'weaponised' for political gain.

Well, duh. Isn't that what every political group tries to do.

Labour will tell you that the NHS is on the verge of collapse. Tories will tell you that Labour would bankrupt the country.

They use this approach because it *works*.

When I voted to Leave it wasn’t because I was duped by lies, it was because I had firmly held concerns re. the democratic deficit incumbent in some EU institutions and a desire to end the suppression of wages caused by unfettered inward EU migration.

It's not just an EU problem.

I know people hate Trump, but his crackdown/focus on illegal migration has seen real wage rises amongst the lowest paid hispanics/black workers over there (the lowest 10%).

In the real world, it's all too easy to see low skilled resources flood a labour marketplace and depress wages.

An issue in Germany now in many sectors after the immigration flood. Seems that many people have come to realise that they don't like an influx of a huge number of people either.

Humans have an inbuilt NIMBY mechanism.

Might just be Guido Fox but that doesn't alter fact that U.K. growth for Q3 is 0.6% while Eurozone is 0.2%

You present your views as if they were facts. The evidence shows a minimal effect:-

Of course brexit itself is likely to have a major effect on wage suppression and jobs

Amazing what some good weather does. Resulting in people spending more money at home rather than on foreign trips. Not all about overseas trade but money circulating around the economy to create a far wider benefit.
