MARKET TALK: GBP Unmoved By Strong BOE Reverse Auction Cover

1510 GMT (Dow Jones) The latest BOE reverse auction received cover of 7.35 which
is way above Monday's 3.36 cover. However, Wednesday's event failed to trigger
reaction in the pound whereas Monday's disappointing cover, coming after a 5.25%
cover in the previous reverse auction, weighed on GBP/USD which dropped some 2
cents during Monday's afternoon session. GBP/USD now trades at 1.3984 from around
1.3978 prior the auction results. (GST)

Well lets hope that's the end of the downward trend for a while....
I had visions of it dropping to 1.35 today.

Now, let's see it stopping over 1.40... even that's starting to look attractive at the moment.... how sad is that...

  • 16:07 18Mar09 GBP/USD: Consolidating Gains from 1.3844, FOMC Statement Ahead

[16:07 GBP/USD: Consolidating Gains from 1.3844, FOMC Statement Ahead] London,
March 18. Cable is currently trading just over one tenth-of-a-cent above 1.3965
(yesterday"s low) as it consolidates gains from a European morning five-day low
of 1.3844. That low was plumbed after the 09:30GMT disclosure of dire UK
    unemployment data (<TGM42331>).

Speculation that a United Nations panel might recommend that the world ditch
the USD as its reserve currency of choice in favour of a shared basket of
currencies was flagged as a factor in the recovery rally from 1.3844, which
topped out at 1.4010. Fresh market-moving influence over the greenback will be
supplied by the 18:15GMT FOMC statement.

Option-wise: a 1.4000 GBP put strike rolls off at the 10am Eastern NY cut
tomorrow (Thursday, 14:00GMT). 1.4029-1.4072 was today"s Asian session range.
    1.4230 was Monday"s 10-day high.

  • 16:58 18Mar09 GBP/USD: BOE Blanchflower Back Calling for Stimulus

[16:58 GBP/USD: BOE Blanchflower Back Calling for Stimulus] Boston, March 18th.
In response to the weak U.K. employment data released this morning, BoE member
Blanchflower shared his views with the media. Headlines from those comments are
hitting the wires now from newspaper reports.

Blanchflower says he"s looking for unemployment to reach 3 million by the
start of next year and that without immediate action the peak could be higher.
He"s calling for a large stimulus plan once more. This isn"t anything new where
this gentleman is concerned. He"s been out front calling on leaders to act
swiftly on stimulus for some time now.

At this point, cable is holding in its relatively narrow range south of
1.4000 where it"s been since after the U.S. data this morning. As yet, there"s no
indication of a change any time soon. Traders are waiting to see what the FOMC
has to say in a bit over an hour.
