I always use American Express travellers cheques, they are accepted virtually everywhere and can be used just like money. Get them in 10$ or 20$ cheques, they are safer than cash. When you pay, you get the change in cash.

Also get a Nationwide Flex account with card (good conversion rates), and he can use hole in the wall to get his money in dollars.

Use credit card for only those things that have to be done using credit card, the rates will not be as good as Nationwide.

    i don't understand this strategy.
if you suggest getting a nationwide flex account there's absolutely no need to take travellers cheques....
while getting the flex account he may as well get a nationwide credit card which will offer the same rate as the flex account.
on the advice about travellers cheques (if you decide for some reason to take them) the OP would be better getting them in $50 or $100 as they can then be used to purchase smaller items and receive cash as change which un-complicates matters about getting pin money to spend when you have took these
in conclusion nationwide , nationwide , nationwide

Yes he does have a visa.

He will take proof that it is his money. He will need that amount for travelling for 7-8 months. he might be home sooner if he runs out!!

  • my daughter is off to america to work and travel for the summer with camp america. should she take travellers cheques in pounds sterling or dollars??? what will be the best exchange rate.
  • she shouldn't take TQ's full stop but certainly take dollars if you have to.
please search for the best methods of spending abroad for the answers.
type nationwide into the search engine for starters
hopefully this saves a fellow contributor from being sectioned

  • well i have just got my USD from the post office in Pitsea Tescos (Essex) and the exchange rate i got was 1.9642 and i paid all by cash over the counter so i never paid anything in fees. That exchange rate was the best i could find, even better than the online post office site, but they do say that the exchange rate can vary store from store.
I think they do such good rates as there is a travelex in there too and i think they try to beat eachother.

  • Hi,
I have 40 canadian dollars left over from a recent trip. Usually i give these to my niece as she likes to collect different currencies, but times are hard and i need them.

Anyway where is the best place to exchange - where will i get the best return from?

    Thanks in advance
