Just a reminder that some cards will levy a fee when purchasing travel money, click here for a list of Debit Cards that don't charge0

is the Post Office credit card still the best credit card for spending in the US?
Yep, it's still the best for purchases, with the Nationwide Credit Card just behind. You also get Section 75 consumer protection for purchases abroad on a credit card.
Make sure if withdrawing cash from an ATM in the US you use a Nationwide Debit Card (Flexaccount) as the credit cards listed charge 2-2.5% to withdraw cash.0 -
thanks both for the replies0

Hi am going to New York with hubby for silver wedding and not sure what money to take as not been to USA before. Have got nationwide cc which I know I can use, but should i take US dollars or american express travellers cheques as well. Not really sure how much cash to take for 6 nights, thanks0

take US dollars as well. You'll need them as soon as you leave airport to pay for taxi and for the bridge/tunnel tolls so try to have some small bills. You will need to (depending on your personal preference) tip people whilst you are there, and some small cafe's/deli's don't take cards.
I took about £20-£25 per day of dollars and any other purchases went on my nationwide cc.
Have a fab holiday!

it depends on how an individual spends money . if you want to visit a few bars and have a few drinks your cash will disappear fairly quickly.
i heartily recommend the nationwide cashpoint card and credit card as it gives you the option to withdraw money at visa exchange rates with no charge as and when required0 -
i'm one of these people that swears by cash, mainly because i don't want to bump up a credit card bill, and fail to pay it all off (i'm still learning!!)
so, i budget (and i drink a lot in the evenings, i love the nightlife in New York) for food and drinks, and some purchases, and save my credit card for larger purchases (very occasionally) and emergencies (food at airport when i've run out of cash!)
and this time, i have to take enough cash for my sisters food too... cos she's skint!0
