Is it illegal to install a radiator that cannot be turned of?

So you get the smell even when the boiler has been turned off by the engineer?
It's not the boiler or CH system in that case.0 -
Are you sure you don't have neighbours who create funny smells at night?
Your posts/rants are very hard to follow. You need to start leaving out irrelevant information and stick to facts and logic.
There are night time gas/heating engineers, but they are expensive and the landlord won't pay, so you will have to.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

Agreed. I would get the electrics checked.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Do the neighbours have/use a coal fire/wood burner? There may be a problem with the chimneys0

When was the last time the boiler was serviced?
By law, this must be done at least once every 12 months (and done by a qualified Gas Safe engineer).
When the service has been completed, your landlord must also provide proof to you that this service has been carried out.
If your radiators are heating up even with the heating turned off and just hot water selected then it could be a problem with the wiring or selector valve and if this was the case it could explain the smell.0 -

Is there an electrical socket close to where the smell is strongest?
I had a similar problem. The cause was a plug that was not quite plugged in and was arcing intermittently.0 -

See post #11. Smell still occurs when boiler has been isolated I. E. not a boiler issue0 -
Why then would it cause the entire living room and kitchen to smell just minutes after I turned on the ECO button at night and it started making noises, if it not a boiler issue? And it also smelled right next to the boiler as well.
And it is in the living room that it smells every night.
And the only reply I got when trying to explain this to the boiler repair guy was something like "Well what were you doing turning the ECO button on in the middle of the night?
Everything I say, they have some sort of excuse for it.0 -
I may as well give up on the idea of trying to contact any Gas Engineers to come out to verify the smell.
I tried and they all say then they have to come out to fix it and that I will get charged about £250 just for them to come out. Then when I explain I am a Housing Association Tenant, they say I have to get them to fix it then. But the Housing Association won't come out at night to verify the smells. Not to mention if I do get one of them to come out they are certainly going to either pretend they don't smell it or else claim its coming from something else.
I don't know why they just cannot simply come out and verify the smell. Geesh
I am probably stuck with the thing of getting some Church People out hre to verify i then when I do they will probably say that isn't good enough since they aren't heating experts.0 -

Post 11 only says that the gas was turned off, not that the electrical supply to the boiler was isolated so it's still a possibility (unlikely I know, but still a possibility) that there is an electrical fault inside the boiler.
As the OP refers to a "plastic smell", I would suggest isolating the electrical feed for the entire heating and hot water system just in case it is something overheating.0
