My kids are away for the weekend and it's too hot to go into the garden so being at somewhat of a loose end, I've followed up on your post.
A copy of this thread has gone to Argos (e-mail and Facebook message) so hopefully they will be looking out for returns of a vango avington 500 5 person tent.

I may well get slated for this but coming on this site for advice on consumer rights is one thing.
Coming here and being advised to do something fraudulent and taking that advice is different.
I sent an email and messenger note too. You're right. The more dishonest people there are like Zippy4emma, the more retailers are likely to tighten their discretionary returns policies, making life trickier for everyone else. I'll help people who've been genuinely let down by retailers but not those who try and defraud retailers.

Hi guys and girls i just joined the forum and ive been having a problem with argos.
Basically i bought a vango avington 500 5 person tent, i got it by home delivery and it cost 299.99.
We set the tent up in the garden and realised it wasnt the right tent. We wanted the avington 500xl which has a bigger living area. It is in Very for the same price so we thought we would send it back and purchase the one from very instead.
    Well, what a palarva!
We packed it down carefully, put it away neatly and took it back to a local store. The woman on customer service says,
    'has it been used'?
I said no, i set it up and realised its the wrong one. She opened it up and asked,
    'did you peg it down'
i said yes to stabalise it, she then says sorry you cant return it theres soil on the pegs and grass on the groundsheet. I was like
'i bought it yesterday, i set it up not realising it was the 500xl we after.'
'She said sorry thats our policy.'
So i left the shop a bit miffed but not defeated and decided to go to another store. (After cleaning the pegs of soil lol)
    You guys still with me?
I get to the other store and same questions although i just said i rolled it out and noticed there was only 4 tent poles when the 500xl has 5, so rolled it back up and decided take it back.
'Sorry cant return it, been used'
I was like hang on a minute it aint even used it was unpacked.
    'Yea got grass on it!'
I said 'manager please' and i spent about 20minutes arguing with him slowly getting more angry. Hes like, 'how am i supposed to sell a second hand tent with grass on it?'
I was like 'what was i meant do? Set it up in the house! Its bound to have grass on it, i set it up on the grass! (Dry dead grass due to this heatwave) not asif its covered in mud.'
I made him take the whole thing out and inspect the whole thing then made him pack it away again. But he still wouldnt give me that refund!

Sorry for the rant guys, my partner saysi should just leave it but i think im well within my rights to return it. Ive never had a problem returning things before so i dont know what the problem with the tent is.

Can i just say i love the show and all the tips and i read the newsletter all the time.

Well, you could have like, checked up on the size before you bought it or like, checked up on the size before unpacking it or perhaps you could have like, cleaned it properly before trying to return it.

"dry dead grass" and what about live ants or other insects that are found in gardens? insects that might decide to start chewing the fabric or laying eggs inside the packaged up tent?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the replacement of the word "said" with "was like" to be silly. I bet Zippy4emma speaks? with inflections? all the way through her sentences? as well, like?

Great reply thankyou and on closer inspection i found a fault on it so i will return it uncleaned to my nearest store.
Thanks for the advice peeps, keep up the good work

You unpacked it again, found a fault, thought sod it, don!!!8217;t need to clean it now.

    All very convenient.

I bought a vango tent a few years ago but I went somewhere to see in situ first before buying

I asked in a previous post how you would have felt if when you put the tent up you found grass and soil stains ?

You do realise that when rejecting goods within the first 30 days, the retailer has the right to make you prove that the fault was there when you took possession of those goods and if the e-mails & messages sent to Argos get to the right people, there is a very good chance that they will do this.
If this happens, I do hope that the fault that you "found" isn't bad enough to stop you using the tent in the future as you may well (hopefully) be stuck with it.

Argos have acknowledged my message and said they will "pass the link to the relevant department."

A clear case of consumer responsibilities rather than consumer rights.
  • Its all been sorted thanks again
