I have found a bag of very old sprouting potatoes at the back of a cupboard - they look a little crinkled and the sprouts are a good few inches in length.
If I peel them well will they be ok to cook or will the sprouting have changed the inside of the spuds?

Rub off the sprouts and cut off any green, and they'll be fine :)

there's more for you on this exisgting thread; we'll merge this later to keep ideas together.

  • Thanks for that - the things you need to know about potatoes.
They were baking potatoes that have been in the dark and if peeled well will still leave a lot of pot so might have a go later and see how they look inside.
    Thanks BB

What you have to remember, is the sprouts are drawing their sustenance from the potato, so the food quality of the remaining potato is reduced. Probably get more sustenace from the shoots.

Hmm I would peel one and see what it's like, I have used potatoes that have sprouted before.

If not do you have a container/bit of garden you could throw them in? I done that with some that couldn't be used and now I have a tiny patch of potatoes growing yay.

  • I have thought of that Aarons Mummy - but I have no ground (live in a flat) but wondered how much space they would need in a pot.

The potatoes resulting from throwouts, usually turn out to be rubbish, unless treated as seed potatoes and planted properly.

Sprouting spuds are often used in Chez Spike as,being a singley,a bag of spuds last's me quite a long time & I've not suffered any problems from them, although the green ones are binned.

I always just rub off the sprouts and use them as I'd originally planned. Can't say I've ever noticed a difference in taste and we're all still alive!
