I remembered these from when I was a kid - It was the craze at my secondary school in the 1980s - and I used to be expert at them. I've even got a photo of me with about 30 of then hanging off my school bag like a big bunch of caretakers keys!!!
So when eldest came home from school with a handful of plastic threads - I was like "No problem give them here".
But, can I remember how to do them, can I ****!!!!!!!Only 5% of those who can give blood, actually do!

Just found out about these last week my grandaughters taught me and when I showed her the bit i'd done she said 'that's reaaaaally good Nan'. I told her that when I felt like a cig I'd do a bit of this instead she thinks that's really good for me too, so thanks to scobies for a few more breaths.:DWomen and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

bumped into a 13 year old cousin today, she gave me a scooby, possibly a keyring - not sure! they're a bit like friendship bands aren't they, my son's 8 and not interested, as posted earlier in the thread the mini light sabres from cereal packets are the playground craze and scooby's are for girls. shame, i think it might be good for his fine motor skills to have a go. ottakers bookshop in my town are having a scoubidoo event on friday, all equipment provided, for children aged 6+ so we're going to that52% tight0

We went to poundland yesterday to buy another packet of scoobies. I am limited to doing the box or round type. My 10 year old has mastered them all by gleaning bits from friends at different schools and a book. She had now made helicoptors. Well makes a change from keyrings, mine is pink and purple, oh is blues or bracelets. She is making a special one for a cousin who is 21 soon. He will be so pleased with this present

They were all the range (and spelled Scoobydoo, I think) at some point in the early 60s at my all-girls school: I'm sure then it was just a girl thing. They made loops for zip pulls on pencil cases, that sort of thing! Am I the oldest person on this board at 52? - I'm amazed how few other people seem to remember them from the mirks of time.

FWIW, I'm considerably older than 19 and we had scoobidoo (as I seem to remember they were called then) at Junior School as well. We are talking 30+ years ago here. I don't remember it being that hard?

The child mentioned isn't doing them - the parent is.

Because I promised him them, because treat day is on Friday, because they are 79p a bag in the local toyshop, because his fine motor skills are delayed as he had to wear bandages on his hands much of his toddler years. Because his beautiful little face lit up when presented with this bag of plastic srtings!!!
I made a scoobie with a little pig on the end today:)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

awwww :-)
we didn't go to the ottakers event in the end - after a week away spud's best friend came back and called for him with a bunch of other boys (he brought them up to 'our end' because spud's not allowed to wander the streets yet). it was a nice day and they had water fights in the street, etc. it was so nice to see after a week of being home alone with me or with just the local girls to spend time with (the 'silly' girls all play together, spud plays with the tomboys with ADHD).
but i agree about these scoubidoos being good for developing fine motor skills. the boys have to join in sewing at school, you wouldn't believe the tears from year 5 boys who can't get the hang of sewing! it really hits their self confidence.52% tight0 -
To get them started, use a small pen to twist around rather then your finger, that way you have two hands and not one
The craze went around my college, I had no idea at first (and didn't really want to know)but then a mate showed me how to do it and I was additcted.Ive made key rings for everyone I know (if they wanted them or not)I remember when this was just a little website! :money:0 -
I remember the Tamagotchis aswell, I remember trying to keep them alive for my daughters, failed! much to the dissapointment of my kids. Scoobydoos are the latest thorn in my side, and with 5 kids I can assure you they enjoy them more than I do! So many places sell them now http://www.scoobydoos.co.uk is where I spend my hard earned money (on plastic string, I still have difficulty with that concept!)0

These things must travel with Dr who in the Tardis - I'm all of 22 and can remember making necklaces and drinks mats out of these silly plastic things in the late 80s
