All week my son pestered me for the darn things.
Just in case you are lucky to have missed out on this craze, they are plastic strings which are woven/plaited/twisted...into all kinds of fun and amusing things such as bracelets, keyrings ...AAAAARGH!
Son had such a raging massive tantrum on Friday that he wasnt allowed to get them. Friday is usually 'treat day' they are 79p a pack from the little toyshop down the road.
Got them yesterday because he'd calmed down.
Who made the scoubidous, who sat in the park fiddling about making keyrings with the things?
ME
Now I cant set foot in a room without my ds saying 'mum will you do some more of my scoobies' NOOOOOOOO! I need to escape! Is this the MOST annoying childhood craze?

Ha..I'm a lunchtime supervisor at a Junior school and every other child were scoobie mad a few weeks ago. Seemed to of died off a bit now (its mini light sabres now) and I'm secretly glad as I was fed up of "starting them off" and asking me how to do it this way and how to do it the other!
Seriously though, They do give a child interest and it keeps them quiet. So I ain't complaining.."There are no pockets in a shroud..."0 -
Only a mother who has spent all day trying to keep 3 Tamagotchi's alive for her daughters would know exactly how you felt!
This was a few years ago when they were the fashion but the experience is etched upon my soul!!!!"This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
Preemie hats - 2.0 -
My neices are both into these scoobies, I had never seen them until 2 weeks ago. Better than some of the stuff they could be in to I suppose??
I sympathise if you have to keep doing them though I don't think I would have the patience.0 -
My son's have just caught on to the scoobies thing, yep they are annoying, and it helps if you have more than one pair of hands when you start plaiting the things!! But I think they are better than the Tamagotchi (children always noticed if they had died and been reborn whilst at school - Oops!)
Arn't scoobies just like the corn dollies that used to be at loads of country craft fairs and in rustic kitchens?
I just wish I'd thought of the idea of marketing pieces of plastic to make a mint!!0 -
yep it wouldn't be so bad if he could actually do the things himself - he's only 5! And ds and dd's tamagotchis died more times than i care to remember, bcos they were too complicated for them to work out
Crazes I went through were clackers, marbles, typhoo tea picture cards (?) Shrinkie dinkies, yo-yos, pippa dolls, keyrings, scented erasers... I spose its part of life that we are destined to be annoyed by kids crazes as much as our parents were annoyed by oursMember no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I can't remember any of the crazes when I was at school (sheltered life - or just too old to remember!) I'm sure we had some.
Anyhow back to scoobies, one of my sons has just invented his own way of 'plaiting' them - tying long strings of knots, he then proudly presents me with the result, saying 'for you to wear to work' - Lovely thought, but how many bits of plastic are mothers destined to wear!!?
Stylophones - my older sister had one, now that was a truly annoying craze! PLEASE don't tell me they are having a revival!0 -
I still have my stylophone ;rolleyes: KNow what you mean, theres me trying to look all business like in a smart suit, whilst lurking under the sleeve is a bracelet lovingly offered by my dd. Aaaah its sweet really. And my son eREALLY thinks Im a supermum now I can make scoobies. But they are still a bloomin nuisance!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Just how many uses are there for a plaited plastic thingy? I may even have them as earings and shoelaces soon!! But your right it is sweet, but we need to learn another way of plaiting them.
Would you ever of thought you would spend money on brightly coloured bits of plastic, just to plait it?
I'm going to look in my mum's loft to see if that stylophone is still there, bet the boys would love it (Arrgh!)0 -
Curious mind wishes to know ....
a) why are you doing it *for* your child? Surely, half the fun is surely teaching them *how* to do it.
b) if, at 5yo, you believe your child is too young to even be able to do it himself they why buy it in the first place?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Have you ever tried plaiting these things? you need at least two pairs of arms
and a degree (in what I don't know) but they are sooo complicated!
It is fun teaching them but we have to learn how to do it first - and what's really annoying is when I'm quite proud of my efforts in helping (even when it's gone a little wobbly) :A a six year old will come up in the playground and show off an immaculatly plaited scoobie key-ring!!!Arrgh!, must have something to do with being more nible when your small. (mind you I can't even do crochet!)
That reminds me, French Knitting - cotton reel type thing with wool. It made a long sausage type thing, which was of no use whatsoever!!!0
