:rotfl: All that food decided to just adopt you, much like how cats will just adopt a new owner.

After we returned from our picnic, I went back out of the house immediately to catch the open market folks before they packed everything up. OH was kind of meh about getting stuff anyway so I went with no plan in mind. He said that if I find anything that might be gone in a couple of weeks or is really seasonal to get it. But, nothing really caught my fancy. I got 4 donut peaches for 85¢ and that's it. We still need veg but I figure we'll survive until tomorrow on random things like cucumber or pasta. :)

    TOTAL SO FAR:
    €249.17 / €400.00
    10 / 12 NSD

  • Hi!

I don’t know if this is the right place for this but I’ll ask anyway. If not appropriate, I will ask for it to be removed.

I am desperately wanting (and needing) to get my food spends down. I am ashamed at the amount we spend on food and takeaway.

I do have some limitations in that I suffer from nausea and an extremely sensitive sense of smell, which means I sometimes struggle with cooking.

Anyway, I mainly shop in Sainsbury’s.

Does anyone shop in Aldi or Lidl and actually get decent food? I used to shop there (mainly Aldi) but found the quality extremely lacking.

I am away in August so will probably join officially for the end of August/September.

Hi Anoneemoose, I've never been in Lidl (not one close to me) but know loads of people who swear by it. I do go into Aldi, and I find it took a bit of getting used to (the way it's laid out, the (lack of brands) etc but I've never had any problem with the quality

Have you looked on the Old Fashioned Money Saving Board? There are loads of posts on there about being frugal with food, I find it really useful :)

Hit a late hitch on the July budget, as we're having a bbq today and OH is going to buy the food - which means he'll buy the most expensive stuff and about twice as much as we need :eek:. Can't help it though, I've got stuff I have to get done today and it's all very last minute.

We've got £43.34 left until Friday and I can see him spending the whole lot today, when I thought we were going to have a surplus, but can't be helped I guess!

Anoneemouse I always shop in Aldi. I only go to Asda for the stuff they don't have, cat food for our fussy cats (but may try theirs again), lentils, some spices and ketchup. We don't like their ketchup, though last week they had bottles of a different brand for 50p and it is delicious. If they still have it I will have to stock up! Also PG Tips. we did successfully downbrand to Aldi Gold Diplomat but after a few packets DH decided he didn't like it (I think we had a bad batch), but the Diplomat was about the same as PG tips if you get a massive box on offer.

This week I spent 81.16 on my main shop and a small top up of milk and bread. I am very pleased. I am planning to work out costs of meals on my meal plan, as we tend to rotate over a month, so that I can balance it better. I know pizza night is expensive, plus Sunday roast. Yesterday the expensive pizzas were shortdated and half price so got those for me and DH and they were delicious. Also got 4 packs reduced plums for the freezer. Some things I make myself and end up spending more, for example their pavlova is less than two pounds but is toffee flavour and I am trying to make our diet healthier. So I decided to do a soft fruit pavlova rather than dousing it in toffee sauce, so had to buy eggs, cream and soft fruit! So probably double the price of the Aldi one. Includes nappies, toilet roll and kitchen roll.

Also when I did my top up shop I spent 1.89 on a premade salad in Aldi. It was amazing. I was thinking how I could make it myself and will try, but they have loads of ingredients and only small amounts of each!

So this week a butternut squash for roasting and a pomegramate came to about £2, but won't all be used for the salad and will do at least 2 days of lunch, I buy spinach anyway and have couscous in the store cupboard. Will give it a go.

I have forgotten the kids need two packed lunches this week but hoping I have enough stuff in to get by with only a small top up or not at all.

Total so far 351.58 - pleased with that.

Think groceries in general have been going up in price and will continue to do so :( Need to sit and get organised, meal plan and stock up on the basics.

I'm thinking along the same lines MM. :( Has anyone else been following the Prepping for Brexit thread? I ignore the political comments on there, but there are some interesting thoughts about potential food shortages, price increases etc and how others are planning on coping. Some posters have mentioned the introduction of rationing  . Not sure about that but I can imagine it could be a self-imposed form of "rationing" as in "can I afford it?" ;)

Everyone seems to be chugging along with varying degrees of success and I'm happy to say that for me Week 3 was a very low-spend affair, a total of £9.73 and x6 NSDs. :j

With one week to go, I still have £44.80 in the budget, a full fridge/freezer and well stocked cupboards so I'm not planning on buying much in the way of groceries for the rest of the month. I will be popping into Sainsbobs on Tuesday though as I need to stock up on household stuff (separate budget) so maybe I should take a pair of blinkers with me. :D
Be kind to others and to yourself too.

A spend showing up on online banking for 11.20, but unsure whether it includes cashback. I can't find the receipt; so will add this at the end of the month if ive figured it out.

Other spends of £1.22 and 0.87, 0.95 in HomeBargain (DD2 was meant to be looking for the 59p D.f. Spread and misread the text and come home with Vitalite) and £2.66 at Morrisons.

Total £5.70... Unsure if any other spends that have gone astray
GC Jan £101.91/£150 Feb £70.96/150 Mar £100.43/150 Apr £108.45 app/150 May £149.70/150 Jun £155.15/150 July £123.74/£150 (includes food, toiletries and cleaning from 13th to 12th of each month. One person vegan household with occasional visitors)

Logging a spend of £5.44 needed some milk so popped into the local mr T and spotted some yellow stickered 5% fat mince so bought 2 packs. I have the lean mince and it's so much more expensive! I shall freeze it and it will make quite a few meals for me.
