Why not say to him your wife is encouring you to have a few "blokes only" activities or evenings out because men generally arn,t a very sociable geoup and she's trying to encourage you to have the odd women free evening.
Obviously if your wife is mt coming, that's a perfect excuse for your friend to say to his wife "Sorry dear but this is a men only night". Whether your friend reads anything deeper into this ruse you won't know but either he WILL, and takes the hint that his wife' s company isn't welcome or just accepts the solo invitation on its face value in which case you can have a pleasant outing without the woman from hell!0 -
