Prepping for Brexit thread

De-lurking to say that I hope this thread does not cease. I have not commented previously because others have posted thoughts similar to any I might have had about the practical aspects of prepping and there was no way that I was going to get involved with the "other stuff".
A big thank you to cuddlymarm for starting it off and to everyone who has added such helpful information.
I come across Kittie on several other threads and have never read anything written by her that I considered would cause offence, unless of course someone was actively looking to be offended IYSWIM.The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
Dominic Raab seemed to suggest that the govt would be working with food producers and supermarkets rather than directly stockpiling themselves.
A bit like Year 2000. There was a big hooha when it was reported that the government was talking to the supermarkets about ensuring there were adequate stocks. The press painted it as if the government was admitting failure but I thought it was entirely sensible. After all the work that had gone into Year2000 preparations I thought it was very unlikely that there would be power cuts and no water coming out of the taps. But that wouldn't have been much help if you still couldn't make a cup of tea because the shops had run out of milk
That risk was compounded by all the bank holidays. I had a sudden horrid thought that Easter might be round about Brexit Day. But it's 21 April next year, a good three weeks later. Though a long bank holiday weekend won't help if there are still logistics problems for the first few weeks
May has two bank holidays so hopefully they get their act together as three long weekends in the space of 5 or 6 weeks could be a nightmare.0 -
Before I bow out so I don't continue to disturb a peaceful thread.
Prepping is political any form of self-reliance is.
Sad to see that Kittie has been PPR there is nothing that's been overly controversial or seditious in this thread.
I don't think you should "bow out" Tori.
There have been differences of opinion on the thread - but there will be differences of opinion any time 2 or more people are gathered anywhere (ITRW or virtually).
A "difference of opinion" is just that - and not a "fallout".
Obviously we arent all going to agree with one or two people - we will have our own views and that's as it should be.0 -
I was reading through earlier posts about stockpiling essential food stores and was reminded of my grandmother's motto (and indeed my mother,s who inherited it from her ). "You can,t go wrong with lentils".
They sound boring but I,ve found them useful on many occasions for producing a satisfying nourishing soup and you can add them in small quantities to sauces like Spag Bol, chilli con carne, etc to make the meat content stretch further.
For those who would like to grow some of their own vegs next year but only have a tiny garden, start acquiring some very large pots in autumn as growing containers. Just ensure they have a drainage hole in the bottom . Start filling them with your kitchen peelings until each one is half full. Then top it up with compost, mix well and let everything rot down over winter. By next spring you will have excellent rich compost and can grow cucumbers, courgettes, tumbling tomatoes and salad crops in them.0 -
Primrose
Lentils make a lovely pate and can be used for veggie burgers with potato, sweet potato, onion, garlic . peppers etc. Mix and match with what you have.
I have never seen a post by kittie that was unkind or seemed to breach rules and I have been here since 2005 till my yahoo account went potty and I could not log in as elona.
Kittie also started the "widows" thread which was a lifesaver when I lost DH three years ago and helped me out of a dark and lonely place even though I had a lovely family and friends.
It is so sad that a thread started with good intentions and good ideas got hijacked by the professionally offended and mockers.
Hugs to all especially kittie.0 -
I've been reading along but haven't posted .... until now. I'd like to add my two-penn'orth and say I can't understand either why Kittie has been PPR'd. I've seen her posts on various threads and have never thought anything she's said has been offensive in any way. Hopefully she won't be missing for too long. For those who would like to grow some of their own vegs next year but only have a tiny garden, start acquiring some very large pots in autumn as growing containers. Ooh, Primrose, thanks for this idea :T. I don't have a garden at all but do have a small patio and quite a few large pots so I'll give this a try next year.
I have a fair amount of cupboard storage in the kitchen but also have a small pantry that I use to build up a reasonable stock of tins, packets etc in readiness for winter but I think it may well be prudent to add further stock to my little "shop" between now and Brexit. If nothing else, it will help to compensate for (inevitable) price increases.Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -
I don't think we should give up on this thread. I think it can be a really valuable resource. All threads go through this at some time or another including the prepping and garden fence in earlier years.
We all come from different angles but if effects us in negative ways this thread will become a knowledge base and support.
I just hope kittie is able to come back because we need her and actually, even though she would never admit it, she most probably needs us. Imagine what emotion this scenario has evoked on to her.:(0 -
Y'know FUDDLE you're spot on right, if we're able to it will be a useful resource for all of us, whether we agree with what happens or not, if there ARE problems in the new year then we'll all of us have to deal with them and regardless of feeling that it's the right thing to have happened or the wrong thing to have happened, the problems will be universal and we'll all need ways round them to cope with whatever they are. So yes, let's keep posting here if that's OK with CUDDLES?0

I was thinking of buying a breadmaker. When we had the snow I couldn't get bread, we live in the sticks and the main road is a hill and the lorries couldn't get in. Milk was hard to get as well. One man was seen in a local supermarket with a trolley full of milk and when a mum asked him if he would let her have some for her children he got irate and refused. I thought at the time that the supermarket should be setting a limit, I remember them doing that when there was a bread strike back in the 1970s. Some people are just selfish.0
