The news is saying the face masks are not effective in stopping the virus from spreading, I guess they make people feel safer if they are taking rudimentary precautions including wearing one but the information seems to be that they don't work.
It must be unbearably frightening to be shut in to a place with no knowledge of how long it's going to be for and no supplies or medical help available (that we know of but there might be) if you don't have the virus, if you DO have the virus it must be unbearable and for those who are caring for you. It's abandonment and segregation taken to the extremes but I don't know what else they could do to stop the virus spread as it's such a newly emerged strain and there is no prospect of vaccines any time in the immediate future.1 -
Yes it's very concerning and I have doubts about the effectiveness of face masks too, and even sanitiser gels. In circumstances like this you just have to take whatever precautions you can. Imagine how terrible it must have been in medieval times during the Black Plague.
A common sense precaution is probably to isolate yourselves from other people as much as possible, especially crowds and social gatherings, but that applies too in serious Flu outbreaks, but for people who have to travel on public transport and go to work it's not possible.
There are obviously common sense lessons to be learned in this case about operating open livestock markets with both live and dead animals which seem to be common in some parts of the world, and the widespread use of air planes between one continent and another is part of the contagion problem. I doubt whether specific planes are restricted to journeys between one country and another so wherever they land they add to the possibility of spreading such viruses.0 -

Sadly true, but they've mapped the genome already [hours rather than months] & scientists are brilliant at figuring "this worked last time, we'll try it again" - all the SARS research will be being re-read & re-evaluated as the first to market with an even partially effective vaccine will have money thrown at them.
I have some sympathy with those protesting at quarantine units being built near their homes but violent NIMBY-ism is not going to help Anyone.0 -
Anybody noticing any prices rising yet?1

I can report that scientists from Oxford University (the same department who fast-tracked the Ebola vaccine) are well onto this as we speak, with lots of international scientific collaboration.0 -
I read that the earliest expectation for a vaccine is April. Which seems terribly far away if it keeps spreading this quickly. Though I appreciate that it is much faster than usual!February wins: Theatre tickets0

Somewhat struck by the idea that Brexit is now Days Away. (Up to a point - the fun will really start once the transitional period is over & some deal is struck, not a coin.)
May get the shopping as usual on the way home, but via Costco.
We're supposed to be focusing on paying off the funeral, but shrewd shopping before inflation bites strikes me as almost as worthwhile.0 -
The pillar of Persil is rebuilt. It's very strange what brings comfort.
Costco really do undercut supermarkets on some things - £1.11/2 litres of Max (OK you have to buy 8, but Asda have them at £1.70 each).
As for loo roll, you can save huge amounts but may need an estate car...0 -
Face masks are not effective in stopping the virus from spreading 100% but its better than nothing and you can get it in your eyes, so you need glasses also.1
