Aw euronorris, poor lamb! Did she stay home? My DD2 loved nursery so much that it used to be a real fight to get her to stay home when she was ill.

Glad you enjoyed the poem DfV :) I discovered it as a child. I forget where; possibly in one of the volumes of my brother's Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopaedia.

No, she went in. Bless her. She sounded dreadful, but she was still in good spirits. She did pass it onto DH. And it became a chest infection in him, and then an ear infection. I was 'holding down the fort' so to speak and then started with a sore throat myself which became a throat infection, with a nasty cough. I got over that, and then had a bad back (too much coughing). Only just getting back to normal.

In the midst of all that, my work office moved. It has been very busy, and exhausting. And DH seems to have come down with another cold. Sigh. That time of year.

DD fighting fit though, and thoroughly enjoying all the Christmas activities bless her. Lovely to see. Very little prepping done here. Just been ticking by basically. Hope everyone else is well x

  • Anyone else fed up with being jumped on by party activists when out shopping? all the parties have tried to give me leaflets and be very earnest and get me to talk to them but I just say 'No thanks' in a definite voice and if they persist just say 'NO THANKS' loudly enough to not be quite shouting at them, they are persistent though and one followed me along the street for a while so I crossed over and went into a shop. If people haven't made up their minds which party they are voting for by now they really should have, we've had 3 years to make the decision haven't we? be it Brexit or General Election political allegiance either way we ought to know our own feelings by now!

I haven't had much of that, but then I haven't been out to the shops much the last few weeks. Sounds very intrusive though!! They'd get a swift 'I've already voted' from me, because I have.

What I find really annoying, is all the rubbish they post through the door! It all goes straight in the recycling. It's such a waste. I hate it. But I have the internet, and research independently. I don't need that pants coming through my door!

Don't tell them you have the internet for heaven's sake :)

What really got my goat this morning was adirect marketing letter marked 'Important NHS Information Enclosed' along with the two other genuine NHS letters. It's coming with me to the polling station on Thursday where I may or may not cause a scene...

In terms of buttonholing, I don't look like the kind of of person to be prevented from going about their business so generally don't get accosted (or didn't because I don't get out much now) Persistent types always received an emphatic !!!! off - with pointing. Pointing works

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

I've moved my paper recycling bin nearer the door.
A son's friend, who has a gerbil, is touchingly grateful that I collect this stuff. I find it helps to have a couple of old Metro papers in my shopping bag in case wherever I find china lacks adequate padding, but the rest (and the party political stuff) starts in the recycling bin & may go to gerbil or the council depending on who requests it first.

Anyone wishing to enter into political dialogue with me in person whist I go about my lawful business (or other entertainments) had be determined, and escorted for their own safety. As not only do I have and will use a vocabulary learned from rugby players & scouts [A First Aider's ticket is Very educational] but once they're unchaperoned they are vulnerable to the most vile accusations...

I find a response of "You've got my vote" whichever party they're canvassing for quickly moves them on !

After all, why waste time preaching to the converted when there are so many other indecisive voters to try and convince?

Come Friday, the carol singers will be able to break cover, and all we'll get through our letterboxes are little red cards from the postie with promises of irresistible trinkets (operation Certain Bankruptcy continues apace and I'm running out of space for the Spode)

Had I only known, Un, I'd have boxed up the Spode Christmas mugs & shipped them to you - combining Spode and irresistible trinkets.

Alas, I hauled them off to the local charity shop who crooned happily that they'd spent "mere seconds" on the shelves. Politely not mentioning that quite a few other mugs were still there, not yet finding the people who love them.

What's your technique for the carol singers who make a hash of Away in the Manger & still expect money off you? Vigorous "lights out noone home" (much as we did around Halloween), but then putting off the choral crews who politely open with a cheerful "We wish you a Merry Christmas", knock & take commissions, as well as polite suggestions they serenade next door, you're trying to get the youngsters to sleep. Whereat they suggest Silent Night & you come round to find you've donated an entire fiver and the little ones have also woken up & are now demanding an encore...

My parents used to shred stuff for the chickens, for bedding. They always said laminated stuff was no good though...

We're quite heavily into Chinese Rose, Edwardian to 1950's. Heaven forbid Mrs Un takes a liking to that xmas pattern too

I can barely get down the stairs unaided at the moment, so door answering duties are out of my hands, but we generally don't get carol singers round here. Commissions..?
