The main thing though, is that changes were made and people got out of dire poverty because they made their voices heard. They forced change and made it happen. It is not a good idea to stiffen the upper lip and suffer needlessly, that isn't appealing to me in the least. I'm not getting political, I don't actually care if we leave or remain - but I do care about ordinary working people's conditions.

I'm trying to keep busy with the practicalities rather than dwelling too much on the 'what ifs'. I too rely on medication and although I would not drop dead without it, I would become more ill as time goes on and just getting through each day would be far more difficult and unpleasant.

I've bought a dehydrator and vacuum sealer in recent days, I'm excited to try these new purchases out, especially as the vac sealer will help keep purchased veg fresher for longer and retard histamine formation. A big plus for me! I am constantly trying to make more space and declutter unused items, making better use of the space we have.

We had to delay some of our refurbishment work till next year but I'm not going to fret about that either. Who knows what tomorrow holds, let alone next summer! However sometimes unexpected good things come out of difficult situations so I'm holding onto that.
  • You make your own tomorrows by your own efforts and the decisions you make for yourself, life gives very little to most of us so we have to labour hard for every good change we can make in it but if you give up today because of fear over what might happen then tomorrow will see you in the same place as you were yesterday!

I believe in the capacity of humans to overcome the hardest of problems, history shows this over and over and we're as a species vey able, very innovative and more than capable of dealing with whatever our future brings, we need to believe in ourselves and our strength rather than allow fear to override fortitude because of an unknown, we WILL succeed in making life good whatever happens.

I’m old enough to remember the great swathe of social legislation in the late 60s and early 70s. Divorce, legalisation of homosexuality, equal pay, anti discrimination abortion etc etc

All of it enacted before we joined the EEC.

We didn’t need Europe to teach us how to be decent. In fact, we were trailblazers. To suggest it’s only the EU that stops ordinary people’s lives sliding back into serfdom seems really odd to me.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • Do you think I have not actually been giving my message to the rest of the world for as many of my 71 years as I've had it to give my dear? I live my message and have done every day of my life since I was old enough to take charge of a small brother and a !!!!less and lazy mother who spent all day every day smoking, eating sweets and playing cards with her cronies. Our lifestyle is here and visible for all to see, we are frugal, we make the best of what we have available, we waste very little and utilise as much of what we've got as it's possible to do. We don't want for anything because we are content with what we have and we've got every single bit of it by our own efforts, been given nothing and expected nothing from anyone else including our parents. you can only lead from the front so we live in the way we feel is best not just for us but for society too , being hard done by wins no friends, being open wins understanding and sometimes actually helps others to find their own way!

    Well here’s my pep talk:

We’re all going to die, every single one of us
Some of us have the luxury of knowing roughly when that will be
    It’s the ultimate in prepping

I could sit in my chair all day, eat like a king and receive gifts & kind words from my heroes for the rest of my life. But I’ve got to keep moving forward. And never look back

    Time to get serious ?
    Hell No

Because I’m no good at being noble & it doesn’t take much to see that my problems don’t amount to a tin of beans in this crazy world. And frankly my dear I don’t give a damn

    But that's just me...

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

I quite agree, very many improvements were initiated in the UK and due to our influence adopted in Europe.

I don’t at all suggest that the EU “stops ordinary people’s lives sliding back into serfdom”, but many of the workers’ rights and production standards which began here and we have benefitted from are resented by many (not all) producers and employers as “red tape and regulations”, some may opportunistically and in the face of new competition seek to remove them or water them down. We now trade within the EU on the basis of our high standards spread by us and accepted into European standards.

The value to us, in this regard, of being part of the EU is that as a bloc of 28 we have a stronger negotiating position than the UK on its own may have when dealing with stronger prospective new trading partners who do not share our values, and make downgrading a condition of trade. Even without that, imports without tariffs will bring in goods produced abroad to standards which would be illegal here, undercutting and putting out of business our own producers.

But perhaps we will have good, strong negotiators who will produce good new trade deals for us which are in accord with our high ethical standards.

Good for you, and congratulations on your strength of mind and strong moral compass. :)

I don’t want to fall out with you, as you mostly talk a lot of sense, which is why I won’t “ignore” your posts. However, when you downplayed (or appeared to downplay) the value of medicines and medical equipment, I was more than annoyed as a very young family member is dependent for their continued existence on such, because of an incurable and life limiting congenital condition.

I think we, or I at least, have taken up too much of our fellow thread-members’ valuable time, so, much as I might like to continue to engage with you on this, this is the last I shall say on the matter.

    Best wishes.

I have just taken part in a survey from Morrisons-the sort you get from time to time if you have one of their loyalty cards. I did register my disatisfaction with the seemingly growing number of empty shelves. I will be interested to see if they respond citing difficulties in obtaining stocks due to Brexit (or people stockpiling).. This has been an ongoing problem for some time now (I posted about it last year as well) but I'm not sure if this is a common occurrence in other supermarkets as I use Morrisons due to it being the closest to where I live, and I'm not likely to go trailing round looking for one or two ingredients.

Funnily enough, where I live our only supermarkets are Asda and Morrisons. I have not noticed any empty shelves at all. We also have a Lidl B&M and Home Bargains, none of which appear to have empty shelves either.
