OP -what opinions did you expect? Surely nobody is going to say that ironing is women's work

Nobody can unilaterally decide that somebody else HAS to do something for them. Slavery was abolished a long time ago.

I do thinks for my parents and they do things for me (they do a lot more for me...) I buy my dad some beers when Im in the supermarket and I get my mum a cake from Bettys once a week.

I would not dream of telling my dad that he HAD to mow my lawn every week for free because I was sick of paying a gardener to do it. Its incredibly rude and presumptuous.

As her dad has recently lost his wife (her mum?), it might be nice if she did it as a favour once or twice, perhaps showing him how to do it if he doesn't know. As he's likely to be over retirement age, I wouldn't assume he knows how to do it if it's always been done by somebody else.

A friend of mine has been recently widowed and prior to this he and his wife were paying someone to do the ironing, I think it was £15 a time.

Now that he is on his own there is of course less ironing to do and he suggested to his only daughter that she could do the ironing instead of paying someone to do it.

She is married with 3 teenage children and doesn't work.

She replied with "OK I will do it for what you were paying ironing lady, it will give me some extra spending money"

He, of course, thinks she should do it for nothing.

    What do others think?

Is this one of those "asking for a friend" posts? ;)

Curious, when you say only daughter do you mean exactly that or do you mean only offspring?

The bit in bold....is she a homemaker? Not working doesn't necessarily mean you have nothing to do, especially if she has 3 teenagers.

Just don't iron. Hardly anything actually NEEDS to be ironed these days if treated properly post wash.

It took me a very long time to realise this (despite people telling me it) but the sense of freedom once I did was tremendous.

I have a cleaner, last summer I asked DD if she fancied doing it for extra money and she said yes but stopped after a couple of weeks. So wouldn't bother me at all to have DD iron for me.
It might be me but I don't get this ^^^^.

    You had a cleaner.
Your daughter said she'd do it for money but stopped after a couple of weeks - possibly leaving you without a cleaner.
So why would you want her to iron for you?
Isn't there a possibility that she'd start doing it and get fed up again?

    I quite agree.
I ironed a dress for my daughter in July 2015, but apart from that I haven't ironed in about 15 years.
When I mention it, people always ask why my clothes never look creased or wrinkled - I tell them that's what body heat is for :D

Life's too short to iron. Just give your clothes a good shake out of the washer !

I'm just about to start ironing which includes 2 linen shirts, 2 linen dresses and 2 pair of linen trousers.
    I couldn't wear linen un-ironed.

I actually quite like ironing, just changed the bedding so have the Egyptian cotton sheets, pillow cases and duvet cover to iron too.
Nothing feels better than slipping naked into a bed with clean, freshly ironed sheets.
