Buying a house near a planned gypsy site

  • Maybe rach is one

Just gone back and done a quick check on most recent posts.

    No, she isn't.

She has the good spelling and grammar of someone that has had a steady education and that wasn't cut short prematurely.

Also refers to owning own house in London and having renovated it.

So - no. That is not a fair comment about her.

Just fortunate enough to have never been on the receiving end of the concerns many here have or worried that she might be personally.

If the house appears to be good value for money for what it is then the current owners know about the possible gypsy site and are getting out before it is built. There is no such thing as a bargain property. If something appears to be cheap then it is because it has got a problem of some sort.
If OP has heard about it and doesn't even live there yet, then pretty safe to assume so do the owners!
  • Point of order here - OP states in first post that the site hasnt yet been built. So there is no previous owner that is "doing a runner" to get shot of the place.

Sounds like a new estate in process of being built - and then this proposal came along.

It's just that the spectre of racism was raised, and I for one feel slightly offended about that.

It is not racism to be concerned about personal security, squalor left by near-neighbours, the value of your house being reduced, and all the other problems that are associated with gypsies/travellers living in close proximity.

The person who asked the original question - about buying a house near a planned gypsy site - has had sensible and reasoned replies.

People don't have illogical prejudices for no reason, and obviously the poster can buy whatever house they like, but it's as well to consider resale values and from what I have read here, most people are very wary of anything to do with gypsies, and certainly wouldn't buy a house near them.

A lot of the posts on this thread, including mine, are perilously close to being racist. But I have take issue with this one - Rach doesn't fit a preconceived stereotype, therefore it is possible to be certain about her ethnic heritage? !!!!!!.

    .
Seems that's incorrect, money. Quote from one of OP's subsequent comments:
"Sorry, I'm not too sure what you mean by 'secondhand?' The house is a 1920s mid-terrace, not new build."
  • I must admit to :rotfl: at people not having irrational prejudices for no reason.

Loads of people imo have irrational prejudices for no reason (I ain't going down the road of explaining the ones I'm thinking of...) and their sheer lack of logic in holding them drives me up the wall frequently...

But I would suggest there is enough evidence around that this sort of thing has often proven to be a problem for people living near such encampments and that is therefore a perfectly logical evidence-based opinion to have.

Already explained that they aren't a different ethnicity.

I know tv programmes spin things for best publicity about whatever subject they are covering - but every tv programme I've ever seen talks about disrupted education (well....logically it would be - all those moves). Followed by the girls, at least, leaving school rather early (seem to recall it was 14/15 years old type early).

Feel free to quote statistics about lots going on to take A levels, go to well-known universities, get careers, etc if you have any. Happy to be corrected if there are lots having full education and a career (not marriage instead and not a job instead).

OP is buying an existing house, the land nearby has a proposal for a Gypsy site that is what is new. Cheap house nearby, 100% the seller has found out about the camp and is getting out sharpish (I bet the house went on sale as soon as they heard) and is hoping people don't find out and the site doesn't get started until they're done.

Roma (the name for gypsies, as opposed to travellers), incidentally, are recognised as a distinct ethnic group with their own language and have been in Europe for 1000 years or so. Travellers are of various origins and are the ones more likely to pitch up illegally, cause trouble and disappear.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

My husband and I moved to a town that has a large and longstanding traveller site six months ago. Some younger travellers have over the years moved into housing within the town and everyone is part of our community.

I'm not ashamed to say that it was a concern for us when choosing the area and we did a lot of research, and spoke to locals. As it happens the house we decided to buy is some distance from the site, but everyone here shares the same town: shops, churches, parks, events, pubs and restaurants. We've not seen any trouble and are out and about a lot.

Sure there are problems with some types of crime antisocial behaviour, but it's perpetrated by scum drawn from all groups in my community not just the travellers. If I were buying it would not be the specific proposal that bothered me so much but more the "unknown" and "uncertain" potential future uses of that currently unused land.
