Buying a house near a planned gypsy site

gypsy site and 5 min walk from your potential house........walk away find a different house0

Really, was it that bad?
I grew up in a house quite close to a gypsy camp. They generally kept themselves to themselves and I never really saw them, but there were a few occasions over the years where we came back from holiday to find our house burgled.
Has it made it harder to sell properties in your area, or affected house values?
 and you want to do same again0 -
Yes, I think you’re completely mad to be even considering it, OP.
I wouldn’t care how close to exchange I was, I’d pull out immediately if there was even a suggestion of a gypsy camp. No matter what discount the developer offers. There’s nothing except homelessness that would make me want to live there, or anywhere in the vicinity of it.
I won’t be the only one who feels this way and you will find it hard to sell in the future. My advice would be to cut your losses and run.0 -
Some friends of ours had a 'temporary' travellers site set up on open land at the back of their house.
They had endless problems with rubbish thrown over their fence - used nappies being the main one! After they politely offered to put any bagged up waste in their bin for collection with their own waste they suffered weeks of verbal abuse, stones thrown at their windows, cars scratched etc etc.
After a series of fights between rival traveller families and a couple of shootings my friends had had enough. They eventually cut their losses and sold up at a significant loss.
Oh yes, There was also a spate of burglaries in the area too (coincidence? I doubt it)!
I know not all traveller/gypsy communities are like this example - but many are. Are you prepared to take that risk?
Would I consider buying near a gypsy/traveller site? Not in a million years.0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone. This isn!!!8217;t really an issue i had ever given much thought, so it is helpful to hear people!!!8217;s opinion.
One thing I have just realised - the traveller site has only been proposed at the end of my road as part of croydon council!!!8217;s local plan. Apparently a planning application would need to be submitted and approved before it was actually a certainty, and no application has been made yet.
Would that make a difference to anyone?0 -
We have, as part of the local plan, a perm site. Its relatively trouble free.
As part as of our new estate they also added a second perm site (apparently it was a requirement) however it remains unused to this day - the new traveler residents arrived en mass like locusts stole all the wiring, the fencing, planting and the copper pipes. There was a massive upswing in local elderly distraction thefts, driveway scams and burglaries. As soon as the site was bled dry they left.
Currently there is a complaint in to the council that they are being discriminated against as the site is unusable and demanding that its reinstated immediately inline with planning rules.0 -

No I'd not buy it.
Is this why the vendors are moving? Get out quick before it's approved and house prices fall.
Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.0 -

Not to me. I still think it's a pretty risky purchase. Even if the gypsy site doesn't go ahead the property is still near a refuse site which the Council might enlarge or use for something even less desirable.0 -
It would really put me off, and I don't care if that's irrational prejudice.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
