Can you Make a FPO in a Bank or Cash Machine

Are you able to make a faster payment transfer at a bank or cash machine. I noticed a large sum of money being transferred to another family member by FPO from my mum's account. She is 95 and I monitor her account for her online and no one else can access this. I thought online was the only way to make a faster payment transfer to another account.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Faster payments can be initiated in branch, although this should obviously be subject to ID verification. Do you have formal power of attorney (that would enable you to investigate directly with the bank)?

If it's not a transaction of your making - ring the Bank FRAUD line NOW.

Be prepared for the Bank to freeze the account.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Some banks do allow payments via cash machines, -providing the payee has already been set up on the account beforehand. You can do this at Nationwide ATMs, -providing you're a Nationwide customer, of course. You can't make payments to new payees from the cash machine.

They can also be done over the phone.

Do you have POA? Does your Mum still do banking herself, if so, what channels does she use?

Many thanks for the replies. There is no outside fraud here, but it is clear that I need to transfer the bulk of her money to an online account with no high street branches and no cards that can be handed over to family members for cashline transactions. I can then retain her day to day working account with minimum funds to cover her outgoings and tranfer money in at her request for her own needs or a world cruise if she so desires!
Any suggestions for a suitable and safe online account?

Starling has a very easy to open current account, and no branches.

But you'd need to hide/acquire the debit card.

It's not clear from your posts what the legal situation is though. Are you acting under PoA or are you just logging in as her? If the latter it is fairly thin ice legally and you'd be best going for PoA.

If you have PoA does she have capacity still? Because if she does I'm not sure you can, in effect, deprive her of access to her own funds.

I have a similar worry with my mother, now in care but still has capacity. She tends to try and gift people money as if she still has some to spare (she hasn't). I have to persuade her not to but legally I can't stop her (and this is with PoA) as legally she still has full access to her accounts.

I know you're not asking about these points, but i think you'd get clearer advice if you let us know the legal situation as it does make a difference to how you can/could operate accounts and so would alter recommendations of which accounts might be suitable

My wife has joint PoA along with her sister, who is bleeding her mother dry. We are not interetsred in the legal situation as it will never come to that. We simply need my wife and her other sisters to have control of her account and stop the spongers taking advantage of her age and her very generous nature. She has full capacity, but is a sucker for a sob story and would give away her last penny to anyone who asks for help. She still needs to be in control and have access to her accounts, but the rest of the family need to be able to monitor the outgoings and make it more diffuclt for the spongers to simply take her card to a cash machine, or take her in person to a high street branch and transfer money to their own account.

She can apply to the court to have her removed as an attorney and the sister can be held liable for any wrongdoing.
But as you have said you are not interested in going down the legal route ---.

i would suggest starling too - the account will run solely on your smartphone there is no other internet banking or branch access allowed it is purely a smartphone app so once it is on your phone nobody else can have access to it

there will be a debit card but you can even turn that off via a switch in the app!
