I found the following address to quickly report scam calls to BT and it appears to be doing some good as I rarely get them now!

I'm sure you think you are doing a public service but the more likely reaction is that they retaliate to you doing this by adding your telephone number to the list of the "vulnerable and easily scammed" which are then passed round the scammers.
The result will be you that get deluged in constant scam calls from everywhere.

I would advise you to simply hang up the call and do not try and wind them up.
It's not about winding them up just wasting their time.
My mobile number has been available on the internet for 10+ years and I can't say I get a large number of nuance calls on it - in fact I'd say the number I have is very low. Maybe my number is marked on the scammer databases as one not to call?

    Regards,
    Steve

I love the idea of "nuance calls" - clearly they are not a nuisance at all! :)

How about getting them to reveal the country they are calling from, insisting you'll only cooperate if you can call them back? That should stop them in their tracks, but if they did give it out, call them then record their opening spiel. You could then play it back when it's your turn to speak and then tell them you'll be sending the recording and phone no. to the country's law inforcers.

I doubt, very much, whether their local law enforcement would be, in the slightest bit, interested....

Except that in the corrupt countries from which many of these scams originate,
the authorities might demand a cut of the profits :)

I have just been phoned three times in 5 minutes with the same message. The first two calls were from 01299824686 and the third one from 01724710894. All wanted me to press 1 for a technician. I had this call several weeks ago as well and pressed 1, just to find out and lead them on.

Had this call today from 01481183365.
Pre recorded message which played twice and the call then ended.

  • Here's a new one. The chap tells you your IP address is 66.249.65.106 and tries to prove it by asking you to type 'my ip address location' into your search engine. If you're using Google, a panel appears with that IP address (and its location in Mountain View CA !) -- quite clearly one of Google's many IP addresses. This doesn't work, of course, if you use a different search engine (I normally use startpage.com, which I recommend).

Where he would have gone next I cannot tell, but after my refusing to agree that that IP address was mine, plus telling him that I would contact my ISP if I wanted to check on the security of my IP address, he called me a two word expletive and hung up.

Sort of fun while it lasted though hardly a good use of time.
