OH just phoned me to say there is a message on our answerphone saying our IP address has been compromised and to phone them.

Is this a scam? Sounds like it, but just thought I would double-check with you experts.

    HAHAHAHAHAH

"Your IP address has been compromised".... Brilliant. What's happened? Has someone stolen the dots? Have the numbers been forcibly changed against their will? Honestly, some of these scammers and the lines they use are priceless.

A call I recently took from one at home from a friendly Microsoft support agent named David. It roughly went along these lines:

"Hello sir, I am a Microsoft support agent, my name is David, your PC is showing as infected with the malware and also many virus, we need to fix this sir"
    "OK, what should I do"
"Right sir, you will need to open the Internet, so please do that"
"Should I switch it on first?"
.... pause...... "yes, switch it on"
"It's amazing how you were able to know my PC was infected despite the fact it wasn't switched on"
...... longer pause than before...... "yes, we can tell"
    "OK"
    20 seconds later.
"Do you have the Internet open"
"Not yet David, I am still deciding whether to load Debian shell or Ubuntu GNOME, give me a second"

    ..... *breathing* Line goes dead.

    "Bye David"

A ruse I used to say was "My computer is running Windows 95 and doesn't have a modem or a network port so how do you know its infected?"

Or there's the more direct approach:

Them: "Hello, I'm <some incomprehensible babble> from Microsoft."
Me: "F off you scammy b'std (or any other suitable sentence featuring two expletives)" followed by hanging up. This isn't as satisfying on cordless phones but probably has much more effect on an older dial-phone where you can just about hear the clatter of the handset on the hook before the call ends. :D

Thank you all for the reassurance.

Seems a strange way to run a scam by leaving an automated phone message telling you to ring this number.

Do you think they actually get any takers? I suppose being automated makes it cheap to do and they can send it out to a lot of phone numbers in one hit.

It only needs one person to respond to make it a successful attempt. That proves the ruse works. If they can get your dosh along the way, they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

  • I have just been phoned three times in 5 minutes with the same message. The first two calls were from 01299824686 and the third one from 01724710894. All wanted me to press 1 for a technician. I had this call several weeks ago as well and pressed 1, just to find out and lead them on.

X25? Haven't touched that since I left the forces. We used it to connect remote radars to the control centre. A system now defunct.

    Edit to add

I lie. We used X6883 which was a modified X25 used by the UKADGE system
