Every little helps

No need for the donate button; the sites finances are thankfully strong. What we need is more people to hear about what the site does and come along on the email... that's the best thing to keep the site moving upwardMartin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

The people behind attacks such as these don't usually give a damn about the end users they are affecting. All they see is a very large site with a lot of users, and in this case a very important day for that site.
It probably all just boils down to bragging rights. The bigger the site and the more important the day for that site, the bigger the bragging rights. Sadly, they are sleeping quite soundly at night; probably quite smugly, too. They brought down a big site on an important day for that site. They don't care that many hundreds of people who need that site couldn't access it; the've just chalked it down as a good attack. Not as good as being able to bring down the Apple site on the day of the iPhone launch, but better than bringing down a whole batch of private websites that affect a lot less users.
The best thing about this (and yes, there is a good side) is seeing everyone responding to it in the true MSE spirit: concerned for other users who might really need this site not being able to access it. Not one of us has responded angrily or sworn at the attacker(s) --apart from wishing them some well-deserved karma-- and it's that which keeps me coming back here.
Thank you, Martin and the tech team for getting the site back up and running. And to everyone who uses MSE, get thee over to this post by Martin and make sure you have antivirus software running. Keep it updated and run regular scans; don't be one of those people who assume that because they have it installed, they don't need to do anything else with it! A good firewall is also essential, and it doesn't hurt to have some spyware scanners, too.I was cut out to be rich, but got sewn up wrong.0
