What they are saying is that your father on law would have been able to get it easily unlocked. You arent a customer of there's so you'll need to pay.

Active, but with no credit. Payg unlock is chargeable. Just top it up and get on with your life.

Your father-in-law got an upgrade, so is presumably using the sim in his new phone, so you get him to put his sim in the iphone he gave you, phone Vodafone and ask them to unlock it. It'd have been far easier for him to do that in the first place before his contract ended and he passed the phone onto you.

Apart from that, your other option is to put £5 credit on your Vodafone PAYG sim, use it in your iphone at the start and end of the 30 day period and after 30 days, while there is still some active credit left, phone Vodafone and they will unlock it. Then once its unlocked you can put whatever sim you want in it, and just bin the Vodafone PAYG sim.

I appreciate all the advice and in hindsight with the father in law I agree it would have been easier but that's not an option at the moment, as far as £5 top up goes I know it is the easiest option I just have an irrational dislike for Vodafone connected to past experiences and this situation does not help . But again thanks for the help . And time I moved on.

Unlike just about all other phones, an iPhone has to be unlocked by Apple. The network sends a request to them and they send the unlock to the phone through iTunes. And Bing! the phone's unlocked.

There are some Ebay sellers that can do it, but that relies on them having someone that works for a network sending the requests to Apple for them, unofficially.

Whose bullying whom here? I can't see that Vodafone has been at all unreasonable.

Wow! Now that is a scam!

If the OP can find a friend with a Vodafone SIM, could they briefly insert that to get Vodafone to unlock the iPhone...?

I'm not sure on Voda rules on that. Most network require the sim to have been used with the phone for some time. Anything up to 6 months before they'll action an unlock.
