Dishwasher vs Washing by Hand
Comments

Hi guys,
What works out as cheaper, using the dishwasher (on eco settings) when full 3-4 times a week or washing by hand every day - which would be filling up the sink and emptying it around twice a day?
Thanks
K

Regardless of cost, that's exactly why we (just the 2 of us) DON'T have a dishwasher !
To us, the idea of leaving dirty pots festering in a machine for a couple of days is just beyond disgusting!0 -
Great, thanks.
Our dishwasher on the specification says it's 12kw per cycle, do you know if that is alot?
It also has an A++ energy rating.
Thanks

This is our dishwasher, doesn't look like it should be costing us an arm and a leg to run?

I don't think Currys have got that correct ... unless it takes over 4 hours per cycle
Currys say the annual power consumption is estimated as 258kWh, which if it uses 12kWh per cycle, would mean you are expected to use it less than once a fortnight.
The supplier says it uses 12l of water per cycle (not 10 litres Currys indicate)
At 3360l of water annual consumption, that would suggest you using it over 5 times per week (ore almost everyday using the Currys figure of 10l/cycle)
If an estimated 258kWh p.a is correct, that would equate to less than 1kWh per cycle.0 -

Why would you only use the dishwasher about once every 2 days on eco setting, yet would need to wash by hand twice a day???
Again, the sums don't really add up.
Your diswasher takes 12 place settings on full load
- so that would be 6 place settings on eco mode
- so you only use 3 place settings per day
If you are happy leaving dirty plates around for up to 2 days, why do you need wash by hand twice a day?
And why does it need a full sink of water for 1.5 place settings?
We can comfortably wash 6 place settings in our double sink
- one full of hot soapy water for cleaning, and the other in cool clean water to rinse.0 -
I swill the stuff off straight away. (its almost clean then)
I then run my DW for 30 mins a couple of days later. Stuff comes out sparkling (half a tablet) including glasses
and this does appear to be a saving on my water bills.
Both my tap and DW use the hot water from the house, so if i'm using less water i'm using less energy to heat.
Just using a tiny bit of electricity to run the pump/motor.
It's probably costing a fortune in dishwasher tablets and rise aid though :rotfl:0 -
I guess it really does depend on your lifestyle but, having finally acquired a house with a kitchen large enough to accommodate a dishwasher (right before Y2K) I have never looked back. There are only two of us but we use our DW once a day and it is always full.
You might find, if you do not have to wash dishes by hand, that you are more inclined to cook more often; even to expand your recipe repertoire, perhaps. Batch cooking can save loadsa money but does create an additional DW load in our house. More than worth it.
If you are concerned about electricity costs and are a homeowner, you could consider looking into getting free solar panels. Time things right and you pay only for detergent/rinse aid/salt/water if metered.

So we have a choice between dishwasher & handwash. Well if it is me that is having to do the handwash then I don't give a ***** what the financial consequences are - I go with the dishwasher. Which according to the stats on my dishwasher is probably cheaper anyway. But I actually in this instance DON'T CARE.0
