It has often been reported that it is cheaper to use a dishwasher than 'manual' washing up - and certainly the hot water temperatures of a dishwasher make a better job IMO.
The great advantage of a dishwasher is surely that you can put out of sight dirty crockery etc and wait until you have a full load.0 -
Non-sense question.
Cheaper
_______
Using gas instant hot water and washing manually is cheaper.
Dishwasher salt, rinsing agent, detergent, or the 3in1 equivalent far outweighs the energy cost.
Better
_____
Since you did not mention "cheaper", but used the word "better",
the answer is the more corrosive chemicals in the dishwasher detergent will give you a better clean, at the expense of the colour fading faster. Using Fairy liquid and washing by hand means the crockery colour will last longer.0 -
You do not say what type of gas boiler, insatnt wall mounted above the sink, combi boiler normal boiler with a storage tank, pan on the stove?
If it is with a standard boiler with storage tank and you only use the hot water to wash up you could argue that is more expensive - all that unnecessary heating.
It would also depend to some extent how much washing up you do.
If you were filling a dishwasher each day with dirty crockery etc then only using 15l of water(1.5 bowls) could well be cheaper. About 1KW of electric c10p. Tank of water each day probably 30/40p to heat and then there is the volume of water, possibly 2/3 times as much depending on soiling doing it manually.
Cheapest good tabs are c.10p a wash as a previous poster pointed out - don't need the salt or rinse aid though.
Also depends on time/convenience etc.
One thing I hate about dishwashers is emptying them though."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Very glib AND very misleading !
There is a website called "Treehugger" (what a great green name !) and even they say a dishwasher is cheaper.
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/08/dishwasher_vs_h.php
"Scientists at the University of Bonn [pdf] in Germany who studied the issue found that the dishwasher uses only half the energy, one-sixth of the water, and less soap than hand-washing an identical set of dirty dishes. Even the most sparing and careful washers could not beat the modern dishwasher. The study also found that dishwashers excelled in cleanliness over hand washing."
Many other green websites report these findings - and - seem happy to do so !0
