the link is google maps , i would be the red car and the police car would be in the position of the white car to the top left position , as you go through the lights using the link the police car would be the red car on the junction , as you can see the cross from my light to the other side is quite a distance so his could well possibly be green by the time i get around

I think we'd established that by post #3, so we're no further forward.

The prosecution will say that the officer's light was green, so the OP's must have been red - that's how traffic lights work.

Trying to prove otherwise - or even to raise sufficient doubt - is going to be an uphill task, and potentially very expensive.

But the prosecution can’t say he crossed the stop line against the red light which is the main point they must prove.

They may be able to, depends what the officers statement says....

Whilst not being able to see the red light the OP is alleged to have gone through makes the task more difficult it doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done.

If, for example, the officer can say he was on green and saw the OP cross the relevant point at this time then the offence is made out.

For an offence of this type, police are usually told that they should observe the lights (both directions) for a few phases to confirm that they are operating correctly and therefore if one set are green, the others have to be red and to include that as part of the evidence.

The evidence isn't as strong as directly seeing it, but is enough, and is accepted by courts quite frequently.

They can, based on the fact that, if the lights were functioning correctly, the OP's lights must have been red. If challenged, they can produce endless (and epensive) expert testimony to that effect.

The OP can seek to prove they were not functioning properly, e.g. with evidence from the highway authority that a fault was reported.

Or he can say there must have been a one-off malfunction which no-one else reported. Would that be enough to persuade a court that there is reasonable doubt? I wouldn't take that gamble.

Go back to the post about the officer being on his own.

If he was then how has he checked the lights?
