Can't believe this is for real?! If it was going in the bin if he didn't eat it you havent lost out. Maybe stop cooking more than you need of just carry on and he happy you are helping someone out.

How about your flatmate charges you for disposing (=eating) your leftovers, so you don't come back to a stinking mess!:rotfl:- oh, just realised someone else had that idea too ...

Looking at this in a different way, since people are missing certain points out is that it seems the person is buying what food they need but cannot factor in the randomness of travelling for work purposes so they have a choice between wasting food or seeing it go to use.

We also don't know the financial situation of the OP, or the flatmate and it may of become a point where flatmate is intentionally buying less food knowing hes subsidised by the person leaving the food

We don't know if they own a freezer or if its big enough, maybe the person is actually being money saving and buying food in advance and cooking for a week then finding they have food leftover which they couldn't predict, the flatmate has the benefit of having food cooked for them, shopped for them etc.

Now theres no best answer but id say maybe they hint to flatmate to do a favour now and again or say they are thinking they will cut back on buying food because its starting to get expensive and they know they normally give them leftovers so its a heads up.

At which point the flatmate may offer a token amount which then benefits them both.

This makes no sense. One the one hand you say they buy food due to unpredictability of work, then you say they will cut back on buying food. If the work is unpredictable then how could they do this properly.

Honestly there is no real benefit to the flat mate of having their food chose and half eaten for them.

If I bought a pizza on a night out and didn’t finish it and had to head out the next day, would you be so grateful and offer me a token amount for my half eaten pizza?!

Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and everyone's valid opinion, i honestly believe that i completely forgot what i was going to say

By the sound of things, you're buying more food than you actually need so, if you didn't have a flatmate, what would you have done with it then? Would you have thrown it away on your return home, or would you have consumed it regardless of dates on the packets?

If the former, then your flatmate might as well eat it before it deteriorates, and there's little merit in asking him/her for payment for something that wasn't edible by the time you return. If the latter, then your flatmate should cough up, as he/she is clearly on a winner.

if someone started charging me for eating left overs, I would say no thanks and go down to the local take away shop.

Buy less so they don't have to worry about having unused food in fridge, so rather than buy X amount for a week, instead buy like 2 days at a time that way theres no waste, hey this is a moneysaving website.

Also im reading leftovers and "left over" different leftovers to me implies say a cooked meal that they had some left, left over would be say if they bought a pack of chicken that had 4 pieces in and cooked 2, theres 2 uncooked left

But also it goes by years of flat sharing, from me offering leftovers to flatmates and them just grabbing stuff without asking assuming its leftovers, or taking the mick and complaining when I haven't got any and also them not giving me their leftovers, for your pizza example they would eat half of mine but when they bought one they would eat the whole lot, even if it was leftovers in the morning, and can be even more annoying when you are the one who would scrape by and they had a much higher wage and bought luxuries.

Also had flatmates who were short of food (but not money again can be getting much higher earnings) scour the cupboards for food, noticing I had out of date food eating it then saying it was out of date thus worthless (or worth less)

Or even doing what was said above but then promising I can take things of thiers, except they always had empty cupboards!
