Really? You cannot be serious!0

This has got to be a !!!! take, if not then you need to sort their life out, and stop being a mean b'stard0
-
No - that's mean. You need to shop more appropriately or invest in a freezer if you begrudge your flatmate eating food destined for the bin.
Find a community fridge scheme if there is one near you and use it.0 -
Cannot believe this question has even been published!!0

Are you nuts? Just don't buy so much food.
A sure way to create a bad relationship with your flatmate.0 -
Yeah you should charge them. in fact introduce charging for everything. If he gets you a drink of water you tip him/her. If they open a door for you then they should be able to charge you. obviously using the toilet should be charged at a variable rate lower for a number 1 as opposed to a number 2. If you are forced to watch a television show on the communal TV then you should charge them for wasting your life. Conversation should be charged and rated. clearly more intelligent interaction would be more expensive. As you can see there would be quite a lot of variable charging so you could have a weekly meeting to work out overall who needs to pay who. I'm guessing the charging for everything methodology may have some unforeseen consequences... maybe a less frequent use of the toilet or secret use. Action( install cameras in the bathroom and develop an AI program to identify use). Ban Imodium in the house. conversation may decrease ( action: actively engage housemate in conversation in order to increase revenues)... Housemate may get a TV in their room in order to avoid shared TV watching (action: remove all plug sockets from housemates room. Watch more of their crappy shows in order to increase revenue). In the words of Jesse J @ it's all about da monies da monies da monies!!! This response is free but i am not happy about it....0

LOL this one's just dumb :-)
No don't charge, because that would be unbelievably lame.
Are you going to put secret cameras in the kitchen to check up whether it was eaten or thrown away?0 -
Don't be ridiculous!! Talk about squeak when you walk - lol. Don't leave leftovers is the simple answer unless you don't know you are going away until 5 minutes beforehand!! You could always freeze leftovers too.0

Is it 2-way? i.e does your flatmate ever leave stuff when they are away and tell you to help yourself rather than let it go off? If yes - then this should even out. If your flatmate is getting the benefit often enough to make a difference and they were a friend as well then I'd have thought they might notice and offer to buy something when you were there/ buy you a drink instead. Plus - are we talking flatsharing or owner/lead renter and lodger? If the latter - you could try upping the rent to compensate.
Of course, the real answer is that if this is costing you a significant amount in food bought and not consumed - don't buy the food when you are likely to go away! Or get a job that doesn't have that issue... Or get a better flatmate :-)I need to think of something new here...0 -
Don't be ridiculous.0
