You cannot tell someone to help themselves and then charge them for it!

I agree with others in the thread that you need to buy less or freeze more!

So you OFFER it to them and then afterwards try to charge them?

You need to start correctly assessing the amount of food you buy

    No charge.

If it were me and you started wanting to charge me for "helping you out so it doesn't go to waste" then I'd simply stop eating it "out of spite" :)

    Even if I starved.

In all honesty, your food might not be that great, but if somebody's offered you some easy food then you overlook the fact you're not overly keen, or they're not that good a cook ..... you eat it because it's easier than getting something yourself... so you might not even be doing any favours for the lodger at all.

No I wouldn't charge them. I'd also meal plan better so I wouldn't be wasting food.

I'll have to remember this next time I go out for a meal with my sister. She often eats my leftovers, especially if we order different meals. So the next MMD - should my sister pay more than half the bill because she finishes off what I can't eat or should I insist the food goes into pigswill.

The real answer is to buy less food or for the flatmate to leave it to rot in the fridge, see how you like that!
  • Ridiculous. You would throw it out otherwise. So, no.

Organise your food buying (and freezing) so you don't have leftovers.

Yes, you can charge him (from now on) - he has the choice of whether to eat it or not, but consider carefully what you are trying to achieve.

Good grief. How petty can some people be?

It would go to waste otherwise, and you told him to help himself.

I can't even believe anyone would think of charging! It beggars belief.

I would charge them and then increase the amount of food I buy each week so my flat mate never has to buy their own food.

Then I would start charging a delivery and admin fee for doing so and make a profit. This is a sure fire way to endear myself to the community and is also entirely made up.
