    The following video is a good primer on M.2 SSDs.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opwON-7J_wI

    Appreciated

    As I am considering case options -is this acceptable for micro ATX build

    Excellent M.2 video,thanks
    I almost keep forgetting M.2 can use PCIe slots depending on what is being connected.

    NVMe PCIe Gen2 x2 2280 M.2
    NVMe = non volatile memory express
    PCIe = the bus type. Not SATA :)
    Gen2 = Generation 2, but there is also a faster Gen3 out there. gen2=5gb\s & gen3=8gb\s
    x2 = the x1 x2 x3 x4 is the # of lanes used. 8gb\s x2 = 16gb\s, 8gb\s x4 = 32gb\s
    2280 = "22" represents the width in millimeters (mm), while the next two digits represent the length, also in mm. Some board support various lengths. You can sometimes fit shorter boards, but is there a place for the securing screw?
    M2 = is just the connector type, similar to usb, just a plug and a socket - with a possibility of up to 12 different key configurations (nasty!)

    I would think hard about buying a 128GB drive, if that was my only drive. Personally I would go 500GB-ish, or larger. For me I would say 250GB-ish is the minimum.

    By the time you put the os on and other stuff then add service packs, 128 will probably work, but I would not want to do it. There is only one device will be able to have this speed. without taking up a slot, and you do not want to keep upgrading as that will keep costing.

    I am very doubtful if you could plug the M2 drive card straight onto a PCIe motherboard bus.

    Personally I would have gone with the manky second hand dell suggestion - it's a money saving site :). Nothing looses value as fast as technology. End of the day intel vs amd - they all end up working the same a bit like a 15 inch steel car wheel vs magnesium one. Unless something is slow or poor, no one really notices.

    My build was planned as 120 standard ssd+1TB HDD.
    I since mentioned I could use a M2 ssd +1TB HDD
    If I can;t connect M2 ssd direct to PCIe via motherboard, could you recommend a card that I could purchase.

    I've since viewed an example M2 ssd direct to one of two slots on motherboard
    As a previous reply suggested, treat M2 ssd install as a drive install (using M2 slot of course on m/board)

    Another question as I've been using multi tab browsing almost all week ilia iPad Pro 10.5
    Trying to avoid any silly mistakes before purchasing 1st batch of build parts.
    Thinking Arir 1st then Amazon -then maybe Currys for win10 usb and possible extras such as cooling which they have in stock.
    I've asked via Amazon though no answer yet.

    Mser's advise if M.2(NVME) PCIe2-slot can run PCI3 M.2 ssd (NVME)
    I.e. Could it run at slower PCIE 2 speed with no boot probs.

    I do not know either, suspect it will, but this link and look for the post by 'the original ralph' say it can
    http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2855440/ssd-pcie-0x4-0x4.html
    This guy says it is also backward compatible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk5jR0HPZ-k

    Buy a Gen3 board rather than the one you list

    Thanks, seems it's unnoticeable speed difference.
    Think I'll start some purchases today after gym.
    Best I continue with the build I have between Aria+Amazon-though I can pick up the last parts from Currys such as cooler and maybe Wifi usb adaptors -haven't even thought of keyboard and mouse yet -and the most difficult addition -a desk-might get to use p.c. In living room.

    Thanks mser's

    Since found the gen3x4 which is faster and fully compatible with my M.2 ssd choice.
    Gigabyte -B360M DS3H
    Ultra-Fast M.2 with PCIe Gen3 X4 & SATA interface
