As I have one or 2 laptops to consider for my i3/win10 needs.
Maybe building a i3 desktop could be an option.
This could be a future upgrade build.
Can £500 be achieved.
I dont have any OS nor monitor.
What can I build and how much realistically would the total cost be.
Any GPU could be basic until I choose to upgrade if required.
Initial use -win10/office 365.maybe some itil studying.
If not I'll revert to laptop choice.

I think an i3 is not particularly imnpressive.0

It can be done. Easily. But for what you've listed you want to do with it a laptop will do the same job and can be plonked on any flat surface.
Realistically these days the way things have gone is basically a laptop is good for internet use and word processing, and the power of a desktop is better reserved for gaming. So if you're not going to game on it all its going to do is sit there and suck up power while you type a letter.0 -
Thanks mser's
I've started via Amazon browsing today.
I3 8100 3.6
Gigabyte Z370P
180.00
Considering 8gb ram+ssd+monitor+win10
Although not initially intended as a gaming build, what I could opt for is a entry level i3 desktop build with intel HD620 intergrated gpu -then re consider gaming gpu at a later stage.Replenished CRA Reports.2020 Nissan Leaf 128-149 miles top charge. As above, get a refurb optiplex 7010 or similar with a core i5 for 200 squid ish ..
Then treat yourself to a nice 24 inch monitor0 -

I respect your advice though the recent 7x and 8x i3's are getting reasonable reviews.
I'm not attempting to purchase or build a high end pc at all.Replenished CRA Reports.2020 Nissan Leaf 128-149 miles top charge. Savings depleted. VM Stream tv M250 Volted to M350 then M500 since returned to 1gb0 -
I think you are misinterpreting what people are trying to tell you, is that spending £500 and you will ending up with a low end spec for a high end price, rather than rate it on performance. Also since you do not mention case and psu, assume you already have those? Why spend £500 when you can get equivalent for £200 or less?I respect your advice though the recent 7x and 8x i3's are getting reasonable reviews.

Spending £200 on either a second hand desktop or laptop with an older but at that time better cpu will give you now a similar performance, but save you £300

the above cpu is better though in the real world you possibly will not notice the 20% difference in speed http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-3470-vs-Intel-Core-i3-8100/2771vs39420 -

I'll delay this build for some time.
Think I'll continue with iPad Pro for some time though win10 would be useful at least some times.
To add my i3 build idea would have been intended as an entry level build, it was never my intention to spec a mid or high end gaming build-at least initially.
Whilst the i5vi3 points are part valid -in my case i3 build would suffice so much that if I opt to either build or purchase a new laptop then I'm very comfortable with i3 7x or 8x cpu.
I've in effect ruled our the idea of refurbs as I like to purchase new and re sell via e-bay at a later stage if of no use to myself.Replenished CRA Reports.2020 Nissan Leaf 128-149 miles top charge. Savings depleted. VM Stream tv M250 Volted to M350 then M500 since returned to 1gb0
