Steering Rack Failure

The Kia dealer have not responded to my request for a copy of the report and fault code, so I rang Kia customer support today and then contacted the dealer direct. Apparently the report and fault codes have been archived and they are looking for it and the person who deals with it is not in today so no timescale of when they will find it. That's the biggest load of bull I've ever heard as it is stored electronically surely. Even more convinced now that I have been had!0

asked for fault codes and report for may repair and got this back -
"I have checked the job card and with the Kia master technician on site if a fault code would be stored from your visit to us earlier this .
As the fault is mechanical there would be no stored codes for your vehicle.
Report says carried out road test found noise from steering area, placed on ramp and inspected all suspension upon inspection discovered excessive play in steering rack"
any advice guys?0 -

I don't think you have any comeback unfortunately. It is quite plausible that the column has gone faulty. Unless you have owned the car from new, you don't know how much it has been abused. If that was enough to prematurely wear the rack, it's entirely reasonable that the column could also have been prematurely worn, it just lasted a bit longer than the rack. Maybe having a new tight rack hastened the failure of the column?
As above, take it to an independent garage and see if a recon or secondhand column can be fitted at a reasonable cost.0 -
But if it was mechanical and not electrical, why would the EPS light come on in the first place in may? I did not feel any play in the steering when I took it in may. The reason I took it in may was the EPS light came and lost power steering. By the light coming on there should have been a fault code for it surely?0
