Steering Rack Failure
I have an 09 ceed with 62000 miles on the clock. I have taken it to Kia dealer as the EPS light came on. Had a phone call to say the steering rack needs replacing and will cost £632.00.
Should a steering rack fail after this many miles or is this normal, if not do I have an recourse with Kia?

Whether or not it "should" fail, you have absolutely no recourse with a 9-year-old car.0

Its an old car. Old cars develop faults.
However independent garages will usually fix old cars for less than dealers so get a second opinion.0 -
I would get a second opinion as it could be the rack and pinion, which connects to the rack. When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you. Nietzsche

The pinion connects to the rack. Not that it makes much difference, if either are knackered a new steering rack unit will be needed.
The Kia price seems a bargain compared to this...

If the mileage is quite a lot of town driving yes it can be normal as it gets far more wear and tear than a car that sits on the motorway. Also if you drive a lot on potholed roads that'll kill a steering rack as well from all the impacts with the holes transferring shock of the impact through the suspension and steering. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. If a light is on, I'd suspect some kind of electrical fault rather than mechanical wear or tear.0
-
I'd also suspect it could be a sensor of some description if the light is your only indication of a problem.
A failing steering rack usually results in a notchy feeling when turning the wheel often accompanied by various creaks and clunks getting progressively worse.0 -

LOL
So you know what A rack and pinion is so that means you've read a text book at some point....
.... but I'm guessing you've never actually worked on an actual vehicle in your life have You?0 -
I suspect that the EPS Ceed uses a motor driven steering column, and a "normal" rack, same as my woeful Renault Nee-San, so Peter could well be sort of right, in that it is the column & motor that needs changing, not the actual rack.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Not sure what the breakdown is for parts and labour but.....
Refurbished rack at £100 such as https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/322460115472?chn=ps&adgroupid=54713418609&rlsatarget=pla-411723807750&abcId=1133926&adtype=pla&merchantid=115090209&poi=&googleloc=9046533&device=m&campaignid=1057752920&crdt=0&ul_ref=http%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F1%252F710-134428-41853-0%252F2%253Fmpre%253Dhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.ebay.co.uk%25252Fi%25252F322460115472%25253Fchn%25253Dps%2526itemid%253D322460115472%2526targetid%253D411723807750%2526device%253Dm%2526adtype%253Dpla%2526googleloc%253D9046533%2526poi%253D%2526campaignid%253D1057752920%2526adgroupid%253D54713418609%2526rlsatarget%253Dpla-411723807750%2526abcId%253D1133926%2526merchantid%253D115090209%2526gclid%253DCj0KCQjwuYTYBRDsARIsAJnrUXBDQ1XAMDhoXJwxX237CiO3OGFx7UaL7gMG_wzVJX5_w7xqGgSWWuYaAlu9EALw_wcB%2526srcrot%253D710-134428-41853-0%2526rvr_id%253D1537032009475%2526rvr_ts%253D7cc0b0511630a9c09ba39b2bfff6a8c4
Get an independent garage to fit it.
(Make sure you buy the correct rack, the above is just an example from a quick Google)0
