  • This is my first post (ever!) so apologies if this is the wrong place...

I am trying to find a Nintendo DS for my elderly (nearly 80!) father who has been ill recently and advised by his doctor to do Brain Training excersises.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas of where to buy one cheaper than the current retail price of circa £100? My parents are retired on a state pension and can ill afford to dip in to the savings. However my Mum has it stuck in her head that Dad needs one so I am trying to find out if I can source one cheaper.

I've looked at ebay - there are few bargains but mostly from places like Hong Kong and I've never ebayed from abroad before so I'm nervous about bidding.

    Any hints or tips?

Also I can only seen to find the DS lite, not the older models (which I thought might be cheaper? Does no one sell these any more?)

    Thanks for any help!

Very BrokeMummy (or I would get them one myself...)

I have bought a ds Lite from hong kong mainly because of the colour i wanted, but generally even these work out to about the same price and those bought in the UK.

you could try GAME, theysometimes have the older DS for around £70. but to be honest the price of new DS's has been pretty static at around the £95 mark for about 18 months or so now.

    what is your budget?
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

  • Thanks for the responses. I hadn't actually thought about a budget, just that I wanted to try and find out if it is possible to pick them up cheaper. I did take a look at Telebid but having looked at some of the posts on this site I think I'll be giving it a wide birth!

I think the old DS not the DSLite would be more suitable for an older person as it is chunkier. You should be able to buy it for under £70 on ebay (I've bought two relatively recently) or look in your local freeads.

Word of caution, my 73year old father can't work "new technology" and funds puzzle/suduko more helpful in keeping his brain active.

Hi, if you only want to have the brain trainer game, there are lots of other handheld games that you can buy that are a lot cheaper like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3697733/Trail/searchtext%3EBRAIN.htm £19.99 from argos or if you type in brain trainer into google, it brings up no end of things. Good luck!

hit the codes site hard - go for john lewis's new customer codes and such like and get one like that - you'll knock around £10-£20 off, more if you use quidco although its worth thinking of this as 'virtual' discounts as cashback isnt a given (although it mostly has been in my experience).

saying that, just had a stooge through the codes section and there isn't that much about at the mo.
