Driving license sent to our address - owner moved over a decade ago!

A driving license recently arrived at our address for the previous owner who left way over a decade ago. (You could feel it was a license!)

I sent it back with a letter saying this person hasn't lived here for x years.

It apparently belonged to the son of the people who previously owned the house. They recently asked if it had arrived so I said I'd sent it back. They've now written saying that their son cannot change his address with the dvla (I don't follow their longwinded explanation as to why) so they have asked the dvla to send it again to our house.

I think this is very dodgy.

Any thoughts? Surely it's fraud to have what is a major piece of id sent to a place where you not only do not live but where you haven't lived for years.

Can I prevent the dvla issuing a driving license in his name at our house?

I'd return it to the DVLA and ignore their request. Most certainly a whiff......

Send them this, and tell them you're doing their son a favour by sending it back as 'no longer at this address':

If my mate - who actually owns the house - sees it first he will just hand it over to them as he is too good-natured and unsuspicious.

I said to him that might end in trouble .... He said they will change the address when they get the license but it all seems very odd.

I'd just ignore them and send it back, but then I also wouldn't be in contact with the people who owned my house a decade ago! Are you also friends which makes it more awkward?

Just scared myself reading that. I got married but didn't change my name so I don't need to tell them do I?

I can just keep my maiden name without having to do anything?

    Absolutely not.

They were not nice to deal with at the time.

Just ignoring isn't an option (friend will pass it on if it arrives)

Likewise saying no to them isn't (friend is in contact after they wrote and is soft hearted!)

So I suppose what I am asking is:

    1. Can I report it? I did write to dvla and have now emailed. Is there a specific dept in dvla that deals with this?

    2. Should it be reported anywhere else? ActionFraud?

Or am I overreacting and it'll be fine? Can someone do much harm with a license at an address where they don't live? (I have vivid imagination and am worrying about financial fraud!)

For 1. Why not just make sure you pick it up and put it straight back in the post the day it arrives so friend has no opportunity to pass it on? Or show your friend the link to the fact that its illegal?

It won't do you any harm I wouldn't have thought, but its properly dodgy on his part.

Am often away.... Mind you, so is he! So I might get it first.

But do you think dvla will send it to our address again after it has been returned once saying this person hasn't lived here for x years?
