    40p per txt
And it is the same in Vodafone and Three and others as well - why would they do this- unless they receive a cut from the provider ?

    Thanks.

Somerset Council say texts to their 07781 number are at normal rates so presumably it's possible to have different charges for these and for ordinary mobile phones on Guernsey. That's why I asked if you knew what the charge to text the specific number was.

I'd be interested to hear what your Council say when they reply.

Edit: I just sent a txt from my Virgin Mobile phone to the Somerset County Council number and was charged 15p i.e. It didn't come out of my allowance and was shown on my account as a 'Text to Channel Islands or Isle of Man'.

Nothing yet - I may have to open a FOI request to get that answered ...

would it not be easier to either wait for their answer or as suggested previously text the number and then check your itemised account online?

Its a matter of principle - why should I be discriminated against - simply because I am unable to speak on the phone ?
Anyone else who is able to speak normally - will be able to phone a normal (inclusive) land line number
I am waiting for a response (but doubt very much whether one will come)

You could use NGT to call the same number as everyone else, there's a no speaking option on it, either with you listening to the other end or having their responses typed to you.

I do get your frustration (I can't hear at all and find text relay very difficult) but bull in a china shop isn't often the best way to get what you want

Why don't you take up your issue with the council (if there is one) with Action for Hearing Loss

w06 is right. You are all over the place with this and making accusations that may well not be true. I ask again, if there is a major problem with these numbers, and a number of councils use them, do you not think there would have been some sort of outcry?

So long as you have your phone linked to it (within the program) yes. I've used it on iPad (on wifi only), iMac, pc laptop and directly on my phone.

OK I have heard from Three accessibility team - who tell me that texting 07781 cost 25.2 p each 160 characters - so a decent length text of say 500 characters would cost almost £1 - and a call is 46p per minute - it would have been FREE had it been an Australian number .. really !!
The reason that I discovered this is that my spending limit on my account is set (purposely) to zero and I was unable to send a text because it costs ....

Yes, but you don't yet know what this 07781 number costs.

As previously said Somerset CC say theirs are at normal rates and @A Nice Englishman sent one there which cost 15p (via Virgin admittedly)

You still need to see what the council says.
