There's a full page article in The I newspaper today about Tunisia as a holiday destination.

That is the total budget for both of us based on an all-inclusive package, and it is about the same that we spend on a self catering holiday in Majorca when factoring in food and drink, which has fast rising costs in both accommodation and tourist tax - we believe the reason for this is they have made almost all private lets illegal so hotels are cashing in, and what with the problems in the likes of egypt and tunisia the people that would holiday there are turning to the likes of the balearics amongst other alternative destinations.

I am open to recommendations of alternative destinations within our budget, and thank you for recommending those 2, but they seem similar temp wise to the canaries and i feel more of a winter sun destination, and i do like a sandy beach - along with wanting the large complex experience after consideration i don't think they suit what we are looking for, but thanks again for the recommendation.

Perhaps look at Croatia or even Montenegro.

Why the need for a large complex though? The real world is cheaper, more interesting and will have much much better food?

Much as we enjoy Side, it's been out of season. I wouldn't go there during the season.....far too commercialised.

If walking around and shopping is important to you, you'll find there's a lot of repetition, much of which is clothing and shoes aimed at easy to please tourists. There's a Saturday market, but it's very touristy.

Manavgat is only a short dolmus ride away though, which is very pleasant. Two markets there, Monday and Thursday, which are better than the one in Side.

I think Bodrum and Fethiye are much better.

Thank you Pete, just having another look now and when looking at Fethiye i somehow stumbled across the Aqua Hotel in Icmeler which looks a lovely hotel for consideration... will keep looking though.

The large complex is just something we have never done, and with wanting a change of scene, thought what better time. The wife prefers the pool scene whilst i prefer the beach, but as long as i get my hours swim each day in the sea i don't mind spending the rest of the time around the pool.

Will have a look at those destinations though, thanks.

Saying all this, the change of destination and new experience is a must, if we find accomodation that meets the pool and sea scene then the board basis can be changed if eating out is cheap enough, we're not big drinkers anyhow, only have a few a day when on holiday and that's it.

I wouldn't travel to either Turkey or Egypt if you want to wander

Tunisia is back on the market , one of the most stable countries in that region , completely avoided the Arab Spring . I know there was a shooting there but it was external people and a one off . If you search news stories you will not find much in the way of trouble going back several years

    Totally disagree about Turkey

I have travelled all over using just public transport and have never had a problem

A friendlier more hospitable country is hard to find

Icemelar is Lovely. The Aqua is a decent hotel but tbh I only ever go bed and breakfast, Turkish food is just too good to limit yourself to hotel catering

A lot of lovely restaurants in Icemelar as well. Now I cant be sure as it has been a few years since we were last there, but there used to be a rule that music was switched off around midnight so it was never mobbed with party goers, more a family resort. If you wanted to party all night you got a taxi to Marmaris

The beach isn't great in Icmelar or Marmaris. I quite like is as I don't like a sandy beach. But take a boat trip and you get to visit some beautiful beaches and coves

Thank you, but since seen a stumbling block with the Aqua in the transfer time being over 2 hours - se we're back to lara and side area's and still looking at Bodrum. Pretty sure to say the more we look at Turkey the more we like what we see.

Although there are AI's in the Fethiye area none of them are the very large resort type you are looking for. I love Fethiye mind you.

Thank you, the magic life one looks interesting, going to look in to that more, and the resort of belek to see how that compares to the likes of side.
