I think your first thoughts about the Barut Hotels in Lara beach are the way to go, based on what you requested0
-
I would also second the Brut Lara,we have been several times and it is a good quality hotel, you can walk along the beach towards Lara or go out the front and visit Lara or Antalya, the weather will be good ( very hot ) when you are there.0

Thank you both, Barut Lara will be our choice should we decide on Lara Beach. We're just researching Side, and Bodrum resorts to see their offerings. In my research i see a lot of Germans go to Lara Beach and Side, that indicates to me a good sign of quality and is a positive for choosing one of these resorts. Problem i'm getting looking at Side hotels is we want big complexes but also within walking distance of local shops which we may have to compromise on and use dolmus... something we are not familiar with but will soon work it out.0 -
I wouldn't travel to either Turkey or Egypt if you want to wander
Tunisia is back on the market , one of the most stable countries in that region , completely avoided the Arab Spring . I know there was a shooting there but it was external people and a one off . If you search news stories you will not find much in the way of trouble going back several years
Browntoa
Tunisia
At present,it is not one of the most stable Countries in the region.
Certainly not outside of the main coastal tourist resorts.
There have been many demonstrations this year protesting against cuts, prices, tax rises, and unemployment and more.
Police stations have been attacked and burnt down.
There is currently a State of Emergency in Tunisia.
The Arab Spring started in Tunisia ,although it was a mostly peaceful Revolution and the former President fled the Country in January 2015
There has been more than one shooting, sadly.
They were not "external" people and it has not been a one off.
You will find a lot of trouble going back a number of years, culmination in the slaughter of more than 30 tourists at an hotel near the City of Sousse in June 2015.
I love Tunisia,but thats the way things are,have been.sadly0 -
£2.5K to £3K budget for the Med and you're worried about rising costs?
You could go somewhere decent for that kind of money.
Look at the Azores or Maderia.0 -
Turkey is a powder Keg , opposition oppressed and held in prison , recent incursions into Syria attacking the Kurds just across the Turkish border angering the Syrians ( and hence the Russians) and the Kurds ( and hence the USA) .
Holidays to Turkey are cheap for a reason , Thomas cook are struggling to sell them at the moment if you look at the cashback sites it's 2% cash back to Turkey but only 1% anywhere else.Ex forum ambassador

Look at the Azores or Maderia.
That is the total budget for both of us based on an all-inclusive package, and it is about the same that we spend on a self catering holiday in Majorca when factoring in food and drink, which has fast rising costs in both accommodation and tourist tax - we believe the reason for this is they have made almost all private lets illegal so hotels are cashing in, and what with the problems in the likes of egypt and tunisia the people that would holiday there are turning to the likes of the balearics amongst other alternative destinations.
I am open to recommendations of alternative destinations within our budget, and thank you for recommending those 2, but they seem similar temp wise to the canaries and i feel more of a winter sun destination, and i do like a sandy beach - along with wanting the large complex experience after consideration i don't think they suit what we are looking for, but thanks again for the recommendation.0 -
Have you looked at Greece?0

No i haven't nor Cyprus to that matter. We've done Rhodes lots of time, used to stay in Pefkos but it got too commercialised for our liking, a rodeo theme bar and we never returned. We've also done Halkidiki but didn't go much on that.
I'll have to take a look and see what large hotel complexes are about, do you have any specific recommendation?
Thank you0 -

Much as we enjoy Side, it's been out of season. I wouldn't go there during the season.....far too commercialised.
If walking around and shopping is important to you, you'll find there's a lot of repetition, much of which is clothing and shoes aimed at easy to please tourists. There's a Saturday market, but it's very touristy.
Manavgat is only a short dolmus ride away though, which is very pleasant. Two markets there, Monday and Thursday, which are better than the one in Side.
I think Bodrum and Fethiye are much better.0
