Fibre, actual benefit?

Utter rubbish. It will be at least a doubling of speed or up to 5 times the speed depending on whether they go for a 38mbps or 76mbps package.

My connection went from a max of 4MB to 73MB when swapping to fibre.

My Daughter has just moved back in with us and uses the internet quite a lot. I've noticed with her on at the same time as I am the down speed drops from 15 Mbps down to 2 or 3 which obviously causes problems. We had BT fibre to the cabinet previously with down speeds of app 40 mbps, cabinet is app 300 mtrs away and the exchange app 1/2 mile, we then switched to EE non fibre which was fine before my Daughter moved in.
I'm now looking to change to Fibre to the cabinet with EE at a cost of app £5 per month extra with speeds estimated as 38 to 45 Mbps. This looks like my best bet, either that or move out myself0 -
Having switched from 6Mbps ADSL to 48Mbps fibre a couple of days ago, I can see virtually no difference. It seems to me it's really only worthwhile when you have multiple simultaneous users.
Depends how much downloading you do, not necessarily multiple users. Streaming HD on Netflix for example, they say you can get away with 5Mb but the fatter your pipe (ie your internet connection) the more room it leaves for other things. Same with OnDemand for Sky. Gets you sooner to the "available" point, ie where you can watch all the way through without interruption.
These days with the proliferation of streaming services and ever increasing file sizes of programs, updates, patches and so on, a semi-decent internet connection of at least Fibre standard is pretty much a necessity these days.0 -
I'm on ADSL and get 15Mbps down. We use iplayer on a smart TV and a Humax box and we have a child who spends too much time on YouTube. Mostly it all works well, occasionally there are complaints that iplayer has stuck, with a red spinning circle, but that's rare.
Fibre is due to be installed in 4 months and my contract runs out in 6 months. Realistically, will I see any significant benefit from upgrading? I think I might see an occasional faster download, but not enough difference to be worth paying extra for.
Fibre-optics make a MASSIVE difference!0 -
Some people report that their nearest fibre cabinet is same distance or further than their exchange. And apparently at 1 mile distance they even out with the FTTC speed dropping off more sharply after that than direct to exchange.

We were connected direct to the exchange. Now we are connected to a green box outside the exchange, about ten feet closer. Download speed rose from 17 to 48.0 -

What is the difference in price between the ADSL and the Fibre?0 -
You'll notice a big difference. I have BB at my place, the girlfriend as Fibre. My 4G mobile is quicker than my BB. So if I need to download Steam games or upload to YouTube, I always do it rounds her as it takes hours on my connection compared to her fibre.0
