Money Moral Dilemma: What should Baby do about Johnny's stalk?

It's disgraceful. buy it "as is" or don't buy it at all.
If the stalks are too big, complain to customer services and tell them, but expect the price to rise.
I'd be interested to know exactly how much is saved, I bet it's hardly worth it.0 -
I take the stalks off when they are excessively long. If they are a sensible length they stay on. I also remove mouldy grapes and I always taste one before buying.
I give plenty of money to supermarkets and dont have any difficulty, morally or practically, leaving long stalks behind.
But I dont think I'd strip all the florets off the stalk and just take the florets... that s going too far.0 -
As one of those who PREFER the stalks to the florets, would it be acceptable for me to remove (and take) the stalks and leave the florets behind?
Maybe he could find someone else that prefers the stalks and share the cost. That way they'd both get a bargain and the shop would be happy too.0 -
Hi all,
those of you who want florets only can buy those in different plastic packs imported from Kenya or Chile.
This just goes to show how people don't know how to use the whole food anymore. You can also puree the stalk and add it to veggie sauces, cremy pasta bake sauce with florets as well or veggie lasagna ... make baby food ...the list is endless. Be creative use all of it!

If I wanted to pay for it I would buy pre-packaged broccoli but it is loose and marked up as £xx per kilo. I think I am quite entitled to buy what suits me!
I must admit that I would never have done this in the past but after a brief stint working there for a couple of months I saw hundreds of people snap off the stalk and nothing was ever said.
If I want to make soup though, I buy the stalk as it is the best bit for soup.
I have always removed the stalk I feel no shame in doing it however, it can be difficult to remove it some times, but I try my best!0 -

Baby goes shopping with her new boyfriend, Johnny. While Baby grabs the milk, she puts Johnny in the veg corner to get the Broccoli; as she walks back she’s surprised to see that he is removing the florets and leaving the stalk behind. He says he doesn’t see why they should pay for what they don’t eat.Should Johnny keep his stalk?Click reply to have your sayPrevious MMDs:0 -

I don't understand why everyone is talking as if the stalk is inedible? I like it raw, but it's also really good roasted, stir-fried, or steamed with cheese sauce... I'm making myself hungry now!
The stalk is the best bit! The fluffy end has no flavour and turns to mush in a nanosecond. My mum calls broccoli stalks 'the poor man's asparagus' and she's right.0 -
What!!! I wouldn't even have thought of it!! Isn't that a bit cheap. That would be like buying potatoes and removing the skin!!! (well sort of) ;o)0

I feel like this dilemma was aimed at me
For the first time ever, when shopping on Saturday, I snapped off the stalk on the broccoli I bought. Have never even thought to do it before but the stalk was enormous on every piece I picked up. Deciding there was no way I was going to pay more for the bit I was going to throw away, I snapped it off. Then felt guilty and must have looked a bit shifty at the till...
And now I've read this thread, I won't do it again as I'll be cooking the stalks in the different ways suggested.
Boy, do I feel told off0 -
I seems quite stupid and poor value for money to buy unfrozen greens in a supermarket, you pay much more than frozen greens, have extra waste and there are often less vitamins in the food because it is days old.MSE_Andrea wrote: »Here's this week's hypothetical situation for you to cogitate on:Should Johnny keep his stalk?
