Is MSE Andrea a fan of Dirty Dancing by any chance? (Baby & Johnny)0

I dont snap anything off but I do look for giant florets with small stalks. Hence nobody loses. Sometimes they have a batch with very long stalks though, is this immoral from the supermarkets point of view (especially when you consider that broccoli in the supermarket is TWICE the price of frozen broccoli, which may well have more vitamins)?
Am I the only one round here who eats the stalk??
Honestly, it's the best bit. It's really sweet and has a
different texture to the floret. (Sometimes needs the skin
taking off the outside if it's a bit of an old bit, but
mostly I just eat it down to about half a centimetre from
the bottom - and if it's home grown, right to the bottom)0 -
I always do it, why pay for things you don't need? Tesco makes enough profit from 3rd world countries for me to not feel guilty about leaving them with a bit of stalk from broccoli!!!!0

Friends who run a market stall had a customer take all the stalks off the tomatoes she wanted to buy - they refused to serve her!
If you want added value produce, pay the extra for the trimmed florets of brocolli. By snapping off the bits you want, you might be money saving in the short-term but you'll be putting up the price for us all in the long run because the supermarkets will change to florets-only packs.0 -
The way I see it, the supermarket is inviting you to purchase their goods 'as is'. If you want to buy the brocolli, pick it up, put it in the trolley and carry on. If you want only the florets then buy the higher priced bags of florets (where the reduction in weight from lack of stalk has been accounted for with an increase in price - plus the convenience charge!).
I don't really see the argument that because Tesco is a huge multinational, making huge profits etc. etc. it is ok to do these things. If you don't like the shop, don't shop there. Taking slightly to the extreme but is it ok for me to steal tomatoes from them because some I got last week had maggots in and I was too lazy to bother complaining or driving back with them? No it's obviously not.
Anyway to avoid rambling further - the brocolli is an item as-is and should not be damaged in order to make your shopping that few pence cheaper. Damaging goods is damaging goods, no matter if you decide to throw a wobbly and smash a vase, or pick and choose which bits of the brocolli you buy.
PS Would the same people that do this shell peas before they purchase them too?0 -
The more people muck about with what is on offer, the more likely it is that the supermarkets will use this as an excuse to pre-package everything; if this happens we will all have to pay more, we will have less choice about the amount that we want to buy and we'll all have to find a way of dealing with the packaging.
By the way, I was really puzzled by the person who threw the muddy end of their leeks away - surely this would be the root end, ie the best bit?0 -
I used to snap the stalks off and then realised that the embarrassment wasn't worth the couple of pence that it saved me. I now chop them up and throw them into my tomato based pasta sauce once a week that has now become a little famous within my famiy and friends circle - I have even been asked to make jars of it for one busy mum. My secret ingredients are things like brocolli stalks and the leftover pulp from fruit and veg after it's been through the juicer plus more that shall not be revealed here. Throw it all together with onion, garlic etc it's bloomin lovely, goes a very long way and is a huge money saver. Think on stalk snappers!0
