Wasn't the last thing Jamie said, "make a little market garden, grow, your own stuff then eat it"?

    How's your garden growing?
  • Keep the stalk.

Why wouldn't you eat the stalks? A good reason please someone?

I usually slice the stalk into rings and stir fry or if I only want to use the florets for something, the stalks can be made into soup, freeze them until you have enough, use with some florets. I had no idea people threw this away!!!! If cut into rings it looks like a different kind of vegetable and tastes different to the florets.

Broccoli stalks are delicious eaten raw or cooked. He should keep the stalk and learn to enjoy lovely raw veggies.
    Cheers

  • I'm terrible. I snap off the stalks from broccoli, from asparagus and even the long muddy bits of the leeks.
 If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain :hello:
  • The stalk is part of the broccoli and should be paid for.
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.
  • Yeah. No stalks for me. But I do it slyly! :embarasse
  • smack his hand and tell him its not fair on the shopkeeper. If you do this in a supermarket they couldn't care less but its straight off my profit if you do it in my farm shop.
  • I am amazed at people that snap anything off........... I need to peel my potatoes but I do it when I get home not in the shop. I also have to pay for the skin that I then compost!
  • It never occurred to me to break off the stalks until I was picking them over one day and having a moan about the lack of florets and the women said "here" - I couldn't believe it, she took the brocolli and broke off the stalk.

I do it all the time now but only when the stalk length is unreasonable (which is most of the time). I don't mind a bit of stalk - as someone said, its great for soup but I object when you get more stalk than brocolli - that is taking the p.

I take the squashed mouldy grapes out of the bags too.

As for a real live grocer, surely they wouldn't choose brocolli with long stalks and minimum florets as they would soon go out of business.

And social conscience, do the supermarkets have one of those - its a 2 way street this trust/conscience thing, don't you think?
we dont have a choice sometimes ,they come in 5kg containers and often there is a shortage ,eg.demand outstips supply, as broccoli is damaged by frost,so it comes from Italy during the winter.

I wouldn't have the courage to snap the stalks off myself BUT I do benefit because then I get to have the stalks - FREE - for my guinea pigs! Always ask first though :)
