Am I the only one round here who eats the stalk??
Honestly, it's the best bit. It's really sweet and has a
different texture to the floret. (Sometimes needs the skin
taking off the outside if it's a bit of an old bit, but
mostly I just eat it down to about half a centimetre from
the bottom - and if it's home grown, right to the bottom)

    Me too!
I don't understand why everyone is talking as if the stalk is inedible? I like it raw, but it's also really good roasted, stir-fried, or steamed with cheese sauce... I'm making myself hungry now!
    August grocery challenge:
    budget £140
    spent so far: £51.34

    Total debt at LBM: £4120
    Current debt: £3622

  • Break off the stalks, peel your spuds, shell your peas, take the skins off the bananas and the stalks off the vine tomatoes. Do what you want shall be the whole of the law! Just don't complain when you get caught and have to pay the consequences.
  • If Johnny's a true moneysaver then he'll buy frozen (current Tesco price 94p/kg) rather than loose fresh broccoli (£1.78/kg). Or he'll grow his own (seeds 79p/packet from Wilkinsons). Baby needs to set him straight! :)

If you have the nerve to do it,go for it,I say.
Only possible downside is the supermarket staff could approach you and ask you not to do it (politely ) or not so politely,or even tell you not to come in the shop again. If you need to shop there is it worth the risk (there are some complete tw*ts of security guards).
  • I tried to snap off the stalk once, and couldn't manage it. It was too tough!

Depends how big the stalk is. Let's face it, it's the heaviest part of something that is sold by weight. I think if there's 4" of stalk doubling the weight, snap it off by all means. You wouldn't buy bananas with half the branch still attached.
    BE NICE - IT'S FREE!
  • Snapping only really works when the stalk is fresh.
I was actually encouraged to break a long stalk by supermarket staff - but then I discovered how nice it is to eat - trim outer skin and slice thinly, cook with the florets - as long as it is young enough not to have split ... I also help the store by salvaging any (decent) broken florets ... but do pick out obviously poor produce eg grapes, onions, etc and leave them on the side of the box.

In a similar vein, every week in my local Asda I see an elderly woman in a wheelchair. She is parked next to the grapes by her daughter (I'm assuming that's who she is) where the lady sits while her daughter does her shopping. Whist waiting she carefully picks the grapes off a whole bunch and puts them into a bag which is paid for when they leave.
  • I always leave the stalk behind. If it's edible then someone else can buy it, if it's not edible, then it shouldn't be on sale. I don't make enough brocolli soup to need the stalks every time and it weighs in very heavily - not a good thing for a money-saver! (although I do make an awful lot of soup for lunches at work). I taught my mother-in-law to leave stalks behind and she always does now.

    :p
Striving down south to stay northern and tight! :rotfl:
