I think it!!!8217;s fair to say that we were most definitely in the wrong with this. I realise that now and I should definitely have dug a bit deeper.

Hand it to a professional to deal with. You can't directly apologise because that will be an admission of your discriminatory behaviour, but you know you need to take steps to put it right. That's where HR need to take over.
I've been the woman in this situation. I was sacked, but eventually negotiated a compromise agreement and a payout. It was 15+ years ago but I still remember it. Don't underestimate the impact this kind of thing can have on people.0
