I have had the Tandem card since March. I applied online and got it in the post within a week. Has worked flawlessly as advertised. I even used it on an overseas holiday - worked as expected. I was able to pre-load my card into credit, so when I used ATM's abroad, I was not charged interest. I managed to pay using the card abroad too. No foreign currency fees.

The app is great, as is their online support. They use a 'chat' type system which is akin to text messaging. You can call them on the phone too - and they sound British and clued up (which is a plus). The people on the chat system via the app have always answered my questions comprehensively and to the point. I like that. The app also sends you a notification ever time you spend money. I like this for security.

Tandem pay the cashback monthly - unlike Amex who pay it yearly.

Downsides (for now). They do not offer electronic billing. You have to get a paper bill in the post. They are working to fix this.

Also - you cannot get an additional cardholder on the same account. Again - they are working on this.

I don't hold my hopes up too high for them keeping the 0.5% cashback forever - it's a loss leader IMHO - but i'll take it while it is going. The charge free foreign transactions is a bonus too.

    Overall - recommended.

You can now download PDF statements in the app, though annoyingly there's no way to opt out of paper statements.

  • So I used Tandem again in Bulgaria and again had issues with the merchant provider UniCredit Bulbank. I used my aqua so I know it is not a mastercard issue. Just be advised always carry a back up.

After two months of waiting to hear back about my application I got an email from them... inviting me to applying for their credit card as I already use the app :undecided

I was going to close my account with them anyway and keep using my current card. I really don't understand how they can have a 2-month backlog. If they're having issues they'd be better off with a wait list / soft search before they process things like JAJA.

    Applied on 21st April.

Received the paperwork today to sign. The agreement clearly says the cashback card. Not sure if I would like to go ahead with the application now.

Interesting you should mention this. I found similar in Bulgaria the other month. Strangely, at the hotel where I was staying, they picked up a different card machine, tried it with that, and it was all OK.

Also had issues in a restaurant. Like you, I had a backup Mastercard (Starling Bank Debit) which worked fine, so Mastercard wasn't the problem.

I never rely on a single payment method after Revolut a few years ago blocked my card and decided to do the whole "confirm identity anti money-laundering" rigmarole while I was in Poland. I'd emptied my current account into the Revolut card that morning so I could spend it, and was left running around Warsaw with just the cash in my pocket!
