should i call them and say i found out they are fake and im reporting to the authorities?0

Did you charge £180 for training or phones?...........if not then they are not the same are they?
I never said it was the same!
I was responding to the comments about events in hotels being a big red flag.
There are legitimate reasons for using hotels - where jobs aren't office-based, where a company is moving into a new area or where the premises don't have meeting rooms available for use.
We paid people for their training, rather than charging them.0 -

My perfectly reasonable assumption is that if the employer doesn't have a workplace to interview you in, then there's no workplace for you to have a job in either.
Not necessarily a much larger event - and you don't have to work in a workplace was my point.
Not only carers but drivers, construction workers, farm workers etc all have work available without having a workplace as you're imagining it.0 -

No - whats the point? just report them - unlikely anything will happen - don't speak to them again - don't answer the phone to them again!

im just asking Mark!
So theres no job in the first place? why dont we go to the police again?
Apologies for being passive aggressive - but the whole thread is about people being scammed when paying in advance, yet you are asking whether it is a scam!

It is a red flag..........that does not mean they are all illegal. It means beware, use caution and if at anytime money is mentioned then they are a scam!
I am sure Emirates airlines recruit in the UK from hotels etc.0 -
The police can and DO act on fraud. They!!!8217;ve begun acting on banking fraud scams and they can act on this. If people can be arsed to write their stories on a forum then they should consider reporting it to the police and making a statement. If people pursued it rather than giving up you!!!8217;d be in with a better chance of legal action. Trading standards? How did you make payment? Cash in hand? If on card then use a charge back claim through your card company/bank. If curiosity is getting the best of you then turn up to the interview but decide not take money with you, but absolutely report this to the police if the scam has already taken place.0

so why is it wrong for someone to be asking for a training fee before we start work?
Because the way work works is that you do some work and they give you money. You don't give them money.
Yes, there are some legitimate jobs where you may be asked to hand over money for a uniform or suchlike - this is generally a way of getting around minimum wage legislation, and even if the job is real and the company is not breaking the law, you should still exercise extreme caution.
Reputable employers absorb this kind of cost.0 -

If you are asked to go for an interview in a hotel conference room it is a screaming red flag. If you aren't being scammed into a simple advance fee fraud, then chances are you are about to be recruited into a pyramid scheme or another type of scam instead.
I'm sure that high-powered executives get interviewed in hotel conference rooms occasionally, when they've been headhunted from a great distance and it makes more sense than flying all the way to headquarters, but if you're a high-powered executive you're not going to be reading this thread, nor are you going to be asked to hand over £180 for "training".
For hoi polloi like us there is virtually no legitimate reason why an employer would want to conduct interviews in a hotel and not at the workplace.
You don't know what you are talking about. Sky and Virgin are companies that I know first hand conduct interviews and tests in hotels conference rooms. They recruit in big numbers in one sitting. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
