Thank you for this response. It is really useful and as I say my step son won't want to have to go t court to defend this and I am not confident enough for him, at 19 to not end up with some sort of black mark against his name as a result of not paying this.
Incidentally, is it enough of a defence to say that it wasn't clear enough that it was pay & display and was beyond the normal expected times of pay & display? It was a car park for a leisure centre at night.
It is wearing us down now to the point my wife is suggesting we just pay (which I know is what they intend to do). If it were me, I would be happy to defend and see what happens. But at 19 I am just uneasy about him having to do this. I honestly thought it would have gone away by now. Mine did from the same night.
 Kind regards0

You can act as a lay representative and act for your son at the court hearing, but he must attend and answer any questions put to him.
If the costs have been inflated with fake add ons you can ask for the case to be dismissed by quoting the other cases where this happened. Have look at beamerguy's "abuse of process" thread to get more information.

Do we need to attend court to ask for the case to be dismissed, or can we do that via the forms that they have sent?0

You build it in to the Defence and Witness Statement, but I wouldn’t see it as any form of ‘given’. You’re going to have to fight this on all fronts - and a court appearance is almost inevitable. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

So it seems the best way out for us now (given that my step son doesn't want to attend court) is to try and pay back some of it. I guess I just need to find a way to say that we will pay the bill minus the £60 contractual cost to avoid having to go to court.
Incidentally, a letter from BW Legal arrived a few days after the county court letter.0

Why doesn't your stepson want to attend court?
What a great learning experience for a nineteen year old.0

I love going to court, and have children that age and would encourage the experience, if any scammer was trying to extort money from them!
It gives you so much confidence when you win.
