  • Hello everyone.
I'd like to join the long haul thread as I am in so much debt due to being on long term sick.
I am 51 with 2 grown up sons aged 24 and 22 (youngest one still staying with me at the moment)
I used to be a project manager on 30k a year and then the funding ended and so did the job.
During my time at work, I had 3 credit cards which I paid regularly but had debts of over £15,000 on them.
The mortgage is £550 per month as I took this out over 20 years instead of 25 and there are still 14 years to go.
Since last year, I have been living on Incapacity Benefit as I have had serious health issues and will be off for some time yet.
When I am well enough to return to work I will be looking for a new job.
I have contacted PayPlan who have been brilliant and I have agreed to pay a token payment of £1.00 per month to my creditors.
My son contributes £220 per month but this is all my income with the IB.
I pay the bills out of what is left and I don't have anything like Sky TV or a mobile although I do have a little car.
Halifax have put me on interest only mortgage but it is still £305 per month.
I cook everything from scratch and am really thrifty but I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel with the debts.
It's reassurring to read your posts and always gives me inspiration and there is always someone worse off than me especially those of you with young children.
I daren't do the snowball thing that I keep reading about in case it says I'll be 125 by the time I am debt free.

  • Welcome to you too KittyBoo! As I said to chops22, well done in taking a step in the right direction.

Glad that you take inspiration from the posts - it certainly helps me to read what everyone else is going through too.

As for adding up your figures and snowballing - I urge you to do it. Although the final total may be daunting, take heart from the fact you'll have more idea where you're at and heading, and with that will come a feeling of control over your finances ... granted, initially your final total and DFD may be a shock, but that sense of control will come.

    Well done again and welcome!

Hello, I've been a lurker (never did like that term!) on here for a few months. I'll bore you with my story another time, but I took my head out of the sand a couple of months ago and it was time to take control of my life again. I would like to join your thread and get myself a little long haul DFW number to put next to the big horrible ones in my signature. This board is seriously fantastic and all the people that are on it are an inspiration, looking through some of the stories and experiences I must admit to having tears in my eyes sometimes as well as laughing out loud. Keep up the good work and roll on 2015...... :rotfl:
  • Hi cb welcome aboard. Look forward to watching your progress. Hi kittyboo well done on joining the boards roll on debt freedom woo woo x

Thanks for adding me. I can still remember the day I first took out cash on my student Barclaycard 13 years ago , I knew it was wrong way back then. The end is in sight for that one at least, March next year. Will have some kind of ritual burning of the statements, that's for sure!
  • Hello to all the newbies! Good luck to you all.
KittyBoo - you may get a pleasant surprise from the snowball. I thought it would take OH and I about 8 years to pay off ours at the rate we were going, but when we did it it came out as 5.

Evening and a big heeeellllooo to Speedy, KittyBoo and cb, welcome on board. :D

Kitty you definitely have to do a snowball, Its a horrible feeling when you see that aldi beans for the next few years is a reality, but it really motivates you and its a great feeling when you can start to see your DFD coming forward! It can be soooo addictive (the snowballs) and there not that bad (the beans)!!!

Well for the past few days I have managed to religiously stick to my budget :A but as always just when I think things are going well reality hits me with a thud - that happened about the same time that I reversed into my friends car with a thud!!!:rotfl: Oh well at least no one was hurt and there is only slight damage, but unfortunately its too expensive to not go through my insurance  . The worst part is that im on a driving course through work at the mo, I didnt dare tell the instructor this morning!! :rotfl:

Apart from that nothing else to report, just still fleabaying and working for my parents for a little extra to pay off.

Hope everyone else is still going ok and just think pay day is another day closer
