hi all and welcome to hairy. i know about dentists, I am going next week with DS, I havent been for a looonnngg time, so goodness knows what he will find. Getting back to something ISOM said earlier, I have often thought about selling the house when things pick up and then renting somewhere cheap, but then i think we would never get back on the property ladder and what would happen to us once we stopped working. Mind you I think that the way things are going the government wants to increase the retirement age, probably be working till i drop!
  • Thanks for the welcome, guys. I'm going to try and come on here more often to keep me motivated and stop me spending. (I'll change my sig!)

I agree that our generation will be working till we drop dead. I can't see a state pension being enough to live on when I get to 65!

I think it could be tricky to get back on the property ladder dubgirl, as lenders seem so reluctant to lend at the moment, and are asking such enormous deposits. My brother was asked for a 30% deposit recently, so decided to rent instead of buying. I'm glad I bought a house when they would take 5% deposit, but my main worry now is losing the house as our finances just seem to get worse and worse.

I hate egg ISOM. So what interest rate are you on now you've declined the 34% they generously offered you?

  • My first goals are to pay off my Next account which is only £258.62 but charges interest of 26.49%APR (ouch).

Then Egg which only charges 18%APR (well I say only but it's all relative!) but to whom we owe considerably more, £7,456.21 to be precise. After that I'll tackle the rest.

I'll get £50 from YouGov soon and I'm planning to pay this off the Next account.

All this will only work though, if I STOP SPENDING!

  • Hi,

I was wondering if I could join your thread? I've been a secret lurker for a while on the forums so thought I should bite the bullet and join if there's room for one more! My partner and I owe a lot from too much studying and time of unempliyment (I shall share more info later and make a signature) so will be here for a good few years... I'd love some support for the long haul!

    Thanks, x

best thing about this thread---is the support---up & downs trying to reach target. 0 debt.

it is a long-haul and many become impatient----but the best incentive is to see the figure lower year on year.

  • Thanks for the welcome, and glad to see I'm not the only newbie!
My OH and I owe between a little over £70k, a lot I know, and we support each other a lot, a fact which I am very thankful for. But I thought it would really help to have somewhere else to come as well.

We had our LBM a couple of years ago, but were not in a good position to do anything about it. But recently, with a new job and payrise for OH and a move which means I could get rid of the car, it means we're finally in a position to sort ourselves out.

So although we're completely daunted by the challenge, all I want is to finally have all our monthly income to ourselves so we can go out for dinner, go on holiday, buy new clothes and have a nice fat savings account! Not too much to ask, surely!!

It'll be a few years, but worth it. So, thats a little about me, I look forward to getting to know you guys a little better.
