Can I join this thread? When I joined the forum a month ago I thought it would take until 2011 to be debt free. I now think with a bit more effort it may be possible in 2010.

We have a slight complication though as we are planning a big birthday and anniversary celebration in 2010 which debt wise could kick us back into 2011 to be debt free. Hope that makes sense. In case you are wondering, the celebration is for a big birthday and a significant wedding anniversary - as our original reception had everything go wrong. It was 2.5 hours late, not everybody got fed etc and we want to have another "go" at it but have things go right this time. We are hoping to invite many of the people from our original wedding (and here comes the morbid bit) hopefully while they are still alive so don't want to leave it too long. Plus some of our newer friends. MIL has said she would contribute to celebration but not sure yet by how much....

We are planning to use the celebration as well for a bit of extra motivation to get on top of our current debt so that any new borrowing for the celebration can be paid off within a year after it....

  • Welcome Savingholmes.

In Search of Me pops up every few days so Im sure she will award you a number. I think you may have seen that the main thing with being a long hauler is learning to become debt free whilct still enjoying life. I think having the celebrations are a great idea and it shouldnt matter if you are not debt free or it holds things back. This is why I am saying sod what the bank account says for a week and aim to relax and have fun. Any damage wont be terrible and Ill catch up in the end.

Through this site you are bound to plan the parties in a much more debt free friendly way as well!

sorry I did start typing a welcome new people post but the phone went and by the time I'd done the chores forgot that I had started....apologies! very welcome f1 & saving...do introdue yourselves and tell us a bit about you!
As for me I have had a bit of a blip this month due to sewing machine and even class plus bits and bobs for my quilting that I've started. Am back on track now but suspect that the % may actually go up a bit this month...oops! In my book the main thing is to keep going rather than give up so I'm on track again! How are others doing?

  • How much 'fun money' do you long-haulers allow yourselves? I have been working flat out these school holidays to pay off some debts because it will help me psychologically to start the school year like this but I am worn out and have done nothing fun at all as I feel too guilty...:confused:
THE LONG AND THE SLOW ROAD SEEM TO APPLY TO DEBTS AND DIETS... THE TWO THINGS I WANT TO SEE THE BACK OF...:D
  • hey, joined this thread a long time ago but never really post..... debt still isnt being fully tackled yet with regular outgoings and a reducing dfd...in fact at this point in time I dont even know when my debt free date is. According to microsoft money its approx 2014 but its worked it out funny so am not really going on that.

my budget doesnt allow for any fun money at the moment although still seem to find myself spending it :(

I just dont think any creditors will take kindly to me paying them reduced payments whilst writing on my plan cinema once a month. Am trying to reduce groceries at the moment to free up the cash and have also been lucky to get a bit of overtime over the summer which has helped.

For a long hauler its all about balance. Its no good being miserable paying off the debt quickly because you are more likely to rebel and overspend. Each budget is different. I try to allow myself £50 a month for myself and allow for a few treats in the grocery challenge.

How about taking a week off before the holidays to relax before the mania of school term kicks in and the inevitable rush to xmas?

    Good luck

At least you are trying without that imagine how much more you debt would be? I hope things get easier for you. Good luck with Grocery challenge. I have spent £1332 in five months compared to the previous £400 amonth = £2000 so £700 saved.
